Amazing to think that, last night, a rare mid-week fixture for the Phoenix was the 5th time the Phoenix and Steeldogs have met so far this season, including pre-season!! Thursday nights game was the third in the roses rivalry and the second to be played at the Altrincham Ice Dome. The Phoenix would be hoping for a better outcome this time around though.
A cold night greeted the fans as they flocked to the Ice Dome, the crowd swelled by a number of school groups in attendance. The Phoenix went into the game without Jacob Corson-Heron and James Archer, Sheffield without Jeff Legue and Craig Elliot.
First Period: The game got underway with a high tempo and a weird underlying tension, at least that's how I felt it. It almost seemed like, after the battle in Sheffield the last time both sides met, it would only take a slight incident to re-ignite the tensions. But, that fear was to be un-founded. The game saw Phoenix controlling most of the puck but coming up against a Steeldogs team who were set up and working hard to re-strict the Phoenix's scoring chances. Phoenix held the puck and pressed int he Sheffield zone but, it would be a turnover, with the D left high that would cost the Phoenix. Sheffield broke out with pace with the Phoenix defence light on numbers, Korhun taking on the puck and shooting a laser guided puck past Fone in the home net. Steeldogs taking the lead at 4min 41sec, against the run of play it may have been but, Sheffield took their chance! The period resumed and the Phoenix again dominated possession and shots on Sedlar but, none of the shots were particularly testing and, the defensive frailties lead to the odd breakaway.
Second Period: For the first ten minutes of the second period you could just re-read what happened in the first and, the next goal in the period was a carbon copy of the first. Sheffield again absorbing immense amounts of pressure, to then capitalise on a turnover with a fast break. Korhun again taking advantage scoring the Steeldogs second at 30min 46sec. Phoenix knew this second period was now crucial. With the way the Phoenix had been playing, they needed to score the next goal. The pressure finally told when, at 36min 31sec, a Bakrlik shot was spilled by Sedlar and, Kovar was on hand to tap in the rebound. This followed a priceless moment where Payette was obsessed with shadowing Burlin along the blue line taking himself out of the game leaving Sheffield down a player on the ice! The goal being the first time the Phoenix had been in a position to tidy up a Sedlar rebound. The goal lifted the Phoenix who continued to pile on the pressure, Sedlar repelling the rest of the shots coming his way.
Third Period: Into the final session, Phoenix continued to dominate the play but Sheffield remaining resolute in their D form and play, keeping the Phoenix around the perimeter and clogging up the shooting lanes in and around Sedlar. Sheffield still threatened on the odd breakaway but the Phoenix were finally making it hard and allowing Fone a chance to make the save. Phoenix did bring the scores level at 46min 40sec when Boothroyd brought the puck in off the blue line and let a wrister go. The goal was given to Bakrlik on the night but, personally, I thought it was just a superb shot from Boother, must have been tipped by Bakrlik on the way through! As time ticked by neither side were able to create a guilt edged chance for a winner, Ref Miller seemingly had woken up and started calling penalties in the last few minutes. The Phoenix, going into OT two men down, Graham in the box to be joined by Psurny.
Overtime: The extra session began with a 5 on 3 to Sheffield as Phoenix had two in the box. Just 11 seconds into the extra session Lloyd Gibson was called for hooking, a make up call in my opinion! Overtime was played like most of the game had been, surprisingly without much niggle and Phoenix in control for the most part but, due to the penalties, it was a little confusing as to how many players each team should have on the ice! As said, the OT period was played like regular time had been, so it was Sheffield who scored the winner. Phoenix in control but turning the puck over centre ice, Gibson on hand to pick up the puck, move in on Fone and score the winner at 62min 20sec.
Verdict: The stats will show how dominant the Phoenix were in this game is most ways but the important one. Phoenix outshot the Steeldogs easily 2 to 1 but, the telling fact was, the shorts were far from quality. 60+ shots and you only score two goals is appalling and far from title winning. That, coupled with some defensive frailties will see the Phoenix a fair way off title winning pace, to many times the Phoenix were caught high up the ice giving Sheffield the breakaway chance. Thank god Legue was not playing as the scoreline could have been worse! That being said, credit must go to Sheffield! Much like when the Bison come to town, they set up to absorb the pressure and hit the Phoenix on the break, Tony must see he needs a plan B! Its frustrating to see the Phoenix take game so easily but, give up too many goals to breakaways.
Now, Sheffield, I would like opinion from fans across the EPL on this. If Sheffield win in your barn, do they celebrate like they have just won the stanley cup? I know winning in OT can be a real hyped up moment but, the way Sheffield celebrated their win last night was disgraceful. Proper stick's/gloves thrown into the air skating at speed to celebrate the win. Call me bitter if you like but, I have seen many other teams win in the Ice Dome in OT (Phoenix included) and none have celebrated like Sheffield do! Sheffield, you have spent alot of money on this seasons team, you need to grow up and realise you are not the little budget team you think you are anymore!
Officiating, a subject I really really try hard not to get worked up about. Last night was, one of the worst displays of officiating I have seen in the Ice Dome. The whole team too Referee and Linesman. Genuinely, rose tinted aside, I have never watched a game and thought, I have no idea what that call was! And that applied to Sheffield's penalty calls too! The result of this game was not wholly determined by the two teams on the ice but, the three teams on the ice!
Anyhoo, that mini rant of my chest, I hold no grudges on Sheffield getting the two points. Im pleased Phoenix got one but, they should have taken both!

Phoenix v Steeldogs War of the Roses 2014
So...it is time.....time to properly dust off The Angry Budgie and get back into the swing of the EPIHL season 2014/15. The current EPL champions take to the ice with the majority of last seasons title winning side in tact which a few tweaks and additions. The annual War of the Roses clash marks the season start for the Phoenix, while the Steeldogs have already been in action with an extended pre-season featuring a visit to France and the Bradfield Brewery cup series against the Telford Tigers.
Last season the Dogs came out top across the two legs winning the WOTR cup and the Phoenix went on to win the EPL title. Swings and roundabouts ey? ;)
On a sunny afternoon in Altrincham, hockey fans from Manchester and Sheffield assembled at the Ice Dome once again to see in the start of Ice Hockey in Altrincham. Friendships renewed, seats taken up, it was time to concentrate on the ice and enjoy some hockey after a long summer!
First Period: It is fairly obvious that, on paper, the Phoenix team is the stronger of the two squads but, in reality we all know the Dogs are a tough nut to crack. For his faults, which are numerous, Payette has his roster working very very hard, drilled well, and who are very much, a sum greater than the parts kind of team. The early stages of the first period were testament to this, the Phoenix dominated possession and chances but, could not put quality puck on net to test Sedlar. Sheffield working hard preventing this and, some obvious rust in the Phoenix forward play mean an early goal for the home side wasn't on the cards. So, in some ways, it was not to surprising the Steeldogs took the lead. Sheffield pounced on a neutral zone turnover to take the lead when Payette set up Jeff Legue for the Steeldogs first of the night, timed 11min 40sec. Sheffield continued to soak up the Phoenix pressure and look to counter on the break or any mistake. The home fans were silenced once again when Lubomir Korhon doubled the visitors lead at 15min 29sec. Phoenix trials on the powerplay were evident again when they struggled to make the extra skater pay, it was on one of these PP's that Sheffield forced a turnover and Legue raced away to score an excellent goal at 18min 03sec. That was a big goal, Sheffield were able to ride out the period and make it to the buzzer 3 goals to the good despite being outshot 2 to 1 by the Phoenix.
Second Period: The Phoenix needed a good start to the second period and, they got it. 88 sec in and Michal Psurny was in the right place at the right time to score a rebound after Bakrlik had applied some pressure to the Phoenix net. The home side on the board the Phoenix looked to make a move on the Sheffield goal. With the Phoenix killing a powerplay the Steeldogs pressured the Phoenix zone picking up a delayed penalty, in the subsequent play Korhon got his second of the night at 25min 38sec restoring the Steeldogs 3 goal advantage. Sheffield extended their lead a few minutes later when Elliot scored the visitors 5th of the night at 35min exactly. The hill Phoenix were facing had now become a mountain! The Phoenix tried hard to force a way back into the game but, were huffing and puffing alot with little reward. A combination of rustyness and lack of cohesion the killer, combined with Sheffield's excellent D work meant the period ended with the Dogs firmly in control. Despite, again, being outshot by their hosts.
Third Period: With the tie effectively over the third period saw a bit of edginess creep into the play. A fair few handbags were brought out but no out and out aggression spilled over....sadly! Sheffield were again on the defective for the most part with the Phoenix struggling to convert their numerous chances. In fact the period ended with the Phoenix outshooting the Dogs 20 to 4!!! The accuracy just wasn't there for the home side and, Sedlar was more than equal to the shots. One goal was scored and it was the Dogs who got it. With the Phoenix on the PP Kovar was caught on the blue line and, a cross ice pass was intercepted by Korhon who raced up ice and scored a fantastic breakaway goal at 47min 29sec topping off a great hatrick performance. Despite some last pressure from the Phoenix the Dogs ran out 6-1 winners on the night and 9-4 on aggregate retaining the WOTR trophy.
Verdict: Absolutely no issues with the result for me. The Dogs longer pre-season told, they looked slicker, more up-to-speed than the Phoenix. The home side looked to have superior quality but, were so rusty in their play. In defence and especially in front of goal. Too many simple shots were just not making Sedlar work hard enough, the Phoenix were not moving him to create scoring chances. Of course, as a Phoenix fan, I would prefer we won a trophy that was on offer but, in the scheme of things WOTR does not give us league points. Plus, until we change our pre-season schedule, WOTR will always be difficult for the Phoenix to win. The new additions to the roster looked good, I was impressed with Chamberlain and Thompson. New import D Burlin looked impressive, a big guy who is not afraid to use his size. Worryingly he did not ice the 2nd and 3rd periods, hopefully it will not be a serious injury! Losing your import D after the 1st period did not help in this game at all!
Attendance: A good crowd filled the Ice Dome, i'll guess at 1,200 in.

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 9th February
After Telford had broken the Phoenix superb home record the weekend before, the Sheffield Steeldogs were the next side in town. The Phoenix would have to dig deep for this one as games versus Sheffield are far from pretty. It would be tough, no two ways about it, Sheffield play a hard chippy game and one that frequently crosses the line. We all know this so, it was down to the Phoenix to deal with it.
First Period: The game got underway with both sets of fans making lots of noise. The game on the ice started feisty, which is no surprise, and hockey was hard to come by in the early exchanges. Fone had started well in the Phoenix net but, Sedlar was pulling off some amazing saves to keep Sheffield in the game. All the pressure, by the Phoenix, finally told. At 15min 38sec Robin Kovar finally broke the deadlock to put the home side ahead. With the first goal scored the game opened up and the Phoenix began to edge the play. A few minutes later Jack Watkins scored a blast of a shot at 17min 11sec to increase the home sides advantage. The Phoenix were cruising but, perhaps because of that, a lapse of concentration cost them a perfect period. Into the last minute Joe Graham had the puck and cleared up ice without looking. The puck went right between two Sheffield players, who skated in un-marked to score. Korhun getting the goal at 19min 21sec.
Second Period: This would be a tough period for the Phoenix. They would have to get over the disappointment of conceding so late in the first and the manner of the goal too. As the puck dropped, it seemed like the Phoenix were still in the dressing room. There were some worrying lapses in defence and the passing was not clicking at all. The first 4 minutes of the period would proved to be vital. Sheffield got the early goal to tie the game, at 22min 45sec through Greg Wood, then less than a minute later Korhun put the visitors ahead, scoring the Steeldogs third at 23min 36sec. The home fans were in shock but, the two goal salvo did at least wake the Phoenix. With composure returning the Phoenix began to lay siege to Sedlar's goal only to find the Sheffield nettie in outstanding form.
Third Period: 20 minutes for the Phoenix to pull the game back from the brink. The Steeldogs continued to play their usual game which frustrates the Phoenix, perfect road game in a way! Sedlar continued to face the vast majority of shots but, try as they may, the Phoenix just could not get through. The action % on the rink must have been hugely in the Phoenix favour, with the puck spending most of the period in the Sheffield end. Credit to Andre though, the Sheffield team are a hard unit to break down. Much to the home fans dismay the clock continued to tick down until, ultimately, the buzzer went and confined the Phoenix to a second home loss in a row.
Verdict: Another frustrating home loss for the Phoenix. A game where a needless D zone mistake gave the visitors a way back in to the game. Had the Phoenix gone in 2-0 up I am confident they would have won. Sheffield did what they always did, and seem to get away with in the EPL, got their nose in front and sat back. Sedlar, justifiably, got their MOM award, he was simply outstanding!
Attendance: A good crowd for the derby game, 1,300.

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 10th November
The EPL season continues it's relentless march, now well into November the ice hockey fan enters it's more familiar surroundings. The cold, wet nights of an English winter. The Phoenix weekend meant a long trip south saturday night to the hangar in Slough to take on old friends, Koulikov/Long and the Jets. Sunday would see our friends from the east the Sheffield Steeldogs come to town. Against the Jets the Phoenix have a winning record, including the blowout result of 12-2 in Altrincham. Putting that aside the games have been close and, saturday night's would be no exception. 3-3 going into overtime, Bakrlik found his scoring boots to win the Phoenix the extra point. A good start to the weekend but Sheffield would be another tough test.
The Steeldogs were another team who faced the Phoenix early onslaught and, the series so far has been in favour of the Phoenix. A bit more background to sunday nights game was a bet made between Tambo (off of Phoenix TV) and Andre Payette. For the game in Sheffield a week prior, if Steeldogs won - Tambo would wear a Steeldogs jersey all game in Altrincham, if Phoenix win - Andre would wear the Phoenix children in need shirt for warmup and post match interviews. Well, the Phoenix won 5-3 so we all looked forward to sunday night. Credit to Andre, he is a man of his word! He duly appeared in his Phoenix jersey, which is now up for auction on ebay! Anyway, sunday rolled round and we all set off for the Ice Dome and, come 5.30pm, the puck dropped on the next 'war of the roses' instalment.
First Period: We all know how Sheffield play, uncompromising physicality. They do, however, have some talent and skill on the roster. In Janis Ozolins they had one of the best players to play in the EPL. Last year and this, the scoring mantle has fallen to Lubomir Korhon. He of the tricky hands and white gloves. The Phoenix felt the full force of his skill in the first period. In fact, it took the Steeldogs less than a minute to score the first goal. It wasn't a poor opening from the Phoenix but, Sheffield worked to create the chance and Korhon executed brilliantly! Scoring the opening goal after 44sec. Any early worry caused by this in the home crowd was set to be just 26sec later when Michal Psurny brought the home side level. Puck possession was fairly even in the first period even though the Phoenix were edging the shot count. Steeldogs scored the next goal when Korhon got his second of the game, timed 15min 16sec. While Sheffield were leading on the scoreboard Callum Pattison had offered Andy McKinnie out again, a hangover from the last game over in Sheffield. This time with a nod from Tony, McKinnie obliged and we had one of the better recent fights seen at the Ice Dome. McKinnie more than edged the fight, connecting with a fair few punches. Definite win for McKinnie, one to watch on Phoenix TV! Buoyed by the fight the Phoenix tried hard to go into the break even stevens but couldn't quite do it.
Second Period: 2-1 to Sheffield was not a worrying scoreline, the Phoenix had more than enough quality to claw it back. But, you never know! Thankfully the second period would turn out to be a real purple patch for the home side. While on the penalty kill, Kovar was found high up ice with a lovely pass out of the defensive zone to go 1 on 1 with Sedlar. Kovar pulled off a fantastic finish and lifted the roof at 27min 21sec scoring a short handed equaliser. With the scores level the game continued to be quite close, Phoenix were getting some shots in on Sedlar but he was proving to be a good match. Sheffield were doing well in keeping the Phoenix honest and not letting the home side run away with things. Then, a powerplay opportunity blew that thinking out of the water. Going on the powerplay the Phoenix scored the go-ahead goal at 37min 03sec, Psurny getting his second. That goal kicked off a mad two minute eight second period where the Phoenix sealed the game. Bakrlik got himself scoring again with a gorgeous wrister at 37min 25sec, Ben Wood got in on the scoring action with a breakaway goal at 38min 52sec, Bakrlik settled his hat-trick with goals at 38min 52sec and 39min 11sec. Shortly after it could have been number 7 with Kovar missing the post by fractions of an inch. Sheffield were shocked, Sedlar was hung out to dry and the Phoenix were dominating.
Third Period: The Phoenix noticeably eased off in the final session, Sheffield replaced Sedlar with Day and looked to restore some pride. A quick goal in the third period from Calvert ensured the scoreboard looked a little better. Sheffield's second goal coming at 51min 12sec. Phoenix were hunting more goals but, without any pressing urgency were not testing Day enough for me. Day, to give him credit, was working hard in goal and was making some good saves. As the period wore on the game began to wind down as the home side looked to secure the points. Sheffield would light the lamp one final time with 9 seconds to go when Gibson go their 4th of the night.
Verdict: Potentially a very tricky game, but that second period blitz was simply awesome. It was good to see Bakrlik back on the scoresheet as he has been struggling for goals a little recently. McKinnie took his fight well and scored a win in that respect. Overall the Phoenix were good value for the win, they had more quality on show than Sheffield, more shots, and that usually means a win. The Steeldogs were another team who faced the Phoenix early onslaught and, the series so far has been in favour of the Phoenix. A bit more background to sunday nights game was a bet made between Tambo (off of Phoenix TV) and Andre Payette. For the game in Sheffield a week prior, if Steeldogs won - Tambo would wear a Steeldogs jersey all game in Altrincham, if Phoenix win - Andre would wear the Phoenix children in need shirt for warmup and post match interviews. Well, the Phoenix won 5-3 so we all looked forward to sunday night. Credit to Andre, he is a man of his word! He duly appeared in his Phoenix jersey, which is now up for auction on ebay! (put ebay link)
Anyway, sunday rolled round and we all set off for the Ice Dome and, come 5.30pm, the puck dropped on the next 'war of the roses' instalment.
First Period: We all know how Sheffield play, uncompromising physicality. They do, however, have some talent and skill on the roster. In Janis Ozolins they had one of the best players to play in the EPL. Last year and this, the scoring mantle has fallen to Lubomir Korhon. He of the tricky hands and white gloves. The Phoenix felt the full force of his skill in the first period. In fact, it took the Steeldogs less than a minute to score the first goal. It wasn't a poor opening from the Phoenix but, Sheffield worked to create the chance and Korhon executed brilliantly! Scoring the opening goal after 44sec. Any early worry caused by this in the home crowd was set to be just 26sec later when Michal Psurny brought the home side level. Puck possession was fairly even in the first period even though the Phoenix were edging the shot count. Steeldogs scored the next goal when Korhon got his second of the game, timed 15min 16sec. While Sheffield were leading on the scoreboard Callum Pattison had offered Andy McKinnie out again, a hangover from the last game over in Sheffield. This time with a nod from Tony, McKinnie obliged and we had one of the better recent fights seen at the Ice Dome. McKinnie more than edged the fight, connecting with a fair few punches. Definite win for McKinnie, one to watch on Phoenix TV! Buoyed by the fight the Phoenix tried hard to go into the break even stevens but couldn't quite do it.
Second Period: 2-1 to Sheffield was not a worrying scoreline, the Phoenix had more than enough quality to claw it back. But, you never know! Thankfully the second period would turn out to be a real purple patch for the home side. While on the penalty kill, Kovar was found high up ice with a lovely pass out of the defensive zone to go 1 on 1 with Sedlar. Kovar pulled off a fantastic finish and lifted the roof at 27min 21sec scoring a short handed equaliser. With the scores level the game continued to be quite close, Phoenix were getting some shots in on Sedlar but he was proving to be a good match. Sheffield were doing well in keeping the Phoenix honest and not letting the home side run away with things. Then, a powerplay opportunity blew that thinking out of the water. Going on the powerplay the Phoenix scored the go-ahead goal at 37min 03sec, Psurny getting his second. That goal kicked off a mad two minute eight second period where the Phoenix sealed the game. Bakrlik got himself scoring again with a gorgeous wrister at 37min 25sec, Ben Wood got in on the scoring action with a breakaway goal at 38min 52sec, Bakrlik settled his hat-trick with goals at 38min 52sec and 39min 11sec. Shortly after it could have been number 7 with Kovar missing the post by fractions of an inch. Sheffield were shocked, Sedlar was hung out to dry and the Phoenix were dominating.
Third Period: The Phoenix noticeably eased off in the final session, Sheffield replaced Sedlar with Day and looked to restore some pride. A quick goal in the third period from Calvert ensured the scoreboard looked a little better. Sheffield's second goal coming at 51min 12sec. Phoenix were hunting more goals but, without any pressing urgency were not testing Day enough for me. Day, to give him credit, was working hard in goal and was making some good saves. As the period wore on the game began to wind down as the home side looked to secure the points. Sheffield would light the lamp one final time with 9 seconds to go when Gibson go their 4th of the night.
Verdict: Potentially a very tricky game, but that second period blitz was simply awesome. It was good to see Bakrlik back on the scoresheet as he has been struggling for goals a little recently. McKinnie took his fight well and scored a win in that respect. Overall the Phoenix were good value for the win, they had more quality on show than Sheffield, more shots, and that usually means a win. Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 15th September
The EPL season is upon us as hockey fans across the country dust off those replica jerseys and break out the satnav's to being the long road to Coventry 2014. The Phoenix opening weekend saw them make the short trip down the M6 to Telford then welcome the Steeldogs to the Ice Dome for the second time in a week. The away fixture to Telford as the first game on the calendar has, traditionally, been quite a tricky one for the Phoenix and, one we have struggled to get a good result from. This year, the Phoenix got their season off with a bang. A cracking 5-1 victory is a great result to bring home from Telford on opening night.
That result set up sundays game versus Sheffield to reward the victor with an early four point weekend. Sheffield's win against the Bees came at a cost. A very physical encounter by some accounts, Sheffield, missing Ben Morgan, lost Greg Wood to a spearing match penalty. This saw them come to the Dome missing some influential players. That being said, a game against Sheffield is no easy matter. The crowd gathered and, due to a wait for Yorkshire Mean Time, a little late the puck dropped and we were off!
First Period: The game got underway with four officials and, even from the early stages, this game was not going to be like last weeks War of the Roses clash. The physicality just wasn't there, perhaps it was the players not icing for Sheffield? Perhaps it was having four officials on the ice but, it was noticeable this game was different. A pivotal moment happened just 6 minutes into the game too, Sedlar in the Steeldogs goal made an awkward save which appeared to hurt his groin. He played on for a minute but couldn't continue. Off the ice he went looking in quite a bit of pain, this thrust the Steeldogs 16 year old back up netminder, Thomas Barkworth. Quite the baptism for Thomas! The Phoenix were enjoying some pressure so it was no surprise the first goal came for the home side, at 10min 09sec Schanbel got the score board moving. Even though the Phoenix were bossing the opening stages the Steeldogs still had chances, and some damn quick players! After a turnover in the Steeldogs zone they raced up ice with a 2-on-1 advantage and Ashley Calvert scored a beauty of a goal to level the game at 13min 54sec. When ever you play Sheffield, there is one thing you can be certain of, powerplay opportunities! It was on a powerplay that the Phoenix got their second goal, Robin Kovar scoring his first in the Ice Dome at 15min 30sec.
Second Period: With Sheffield's lines depleted the second period saw the Phoenix take the win effectively. With the short bench and with four officials on the Ice the Steeldogs could not play their normal game and, could not live with the Phoenix firepower on home ice. It didn't take long for the Phoenix to score again, the Phoenix third came from Jack Watkins at 21min 21sec. The Phoenix continued to apply pressure and were peppering the Sheffield goal with shots. The game also saw the Phoenix hit the posts numerous times, even saying that, the shooting was accurate. The next goal came at 23min 44sec when Bakrlik got on the scoresheet. Boothroyd was next scoring on the powerplay with Payette sitting for 2 minutes, his goal at 29min 14sec. Sheffield then reminded everyone they were still there when Elliot left everyone for dead and scored a wonderful solo effort at 35min 13sec. This provoked the Phoenix back into action and Bakrlik would take less than 2 minutes to complete his first hattrick. His 2nd coming at 36min 23sec and his third, impossibly squeezed between Barkworth and his near post coming at 38min 38sec. The buzzer sounded and the teams went back to the locker rooms with the scores 7-2 Phoenix.
Third Period: The final session saw Tony Hand take to the bench and the Phoenix job really was to see out the win. Less than two minutes into the period the home fans were celebrating again when Ben Wood took a shot from the blue line which beat Barkworth through the five hole, goal timed at 41min 43sec. The minutes ticket by as the game eased up and, after a time out taken by the Phoenix, Tony Hand put El-Hage in to see the game through. Robert Schnabel got his second goal of the game at 48min 18sec and, just 9 seconds later Andy McKinnie got his second too. Tony never likes to run up the score and im sure that was the message coming from the bench so, when the 11th went in it was almost an apologetic celebration from Boothroyd. His second of the game coming at 51min 29sec. The final minutes saw the teams go through the motions waiting the final buzzer.
Verdict: A win against your rivals is always pleasing, grinding your rivals into the dirt is something to be savoured but, I just can't feel explosively ecstatic as this was a way below par Steeldogs side. With the likes of Wood/Morgan missing Sheffield really lose energy and drive from their line up. Add in the loss of Sedlar you remove that quality in between the pipes, the foundation on which you can play your game. Add in the fourth official on the ice and, Sheffield's usual chippy play was lessened. It was almost a perfect storm for Sheffield which the Phoenix were able to capitalise on. Taking no credit away from the Phoenix, it was a very good performance. The accuracy of shooting was excellent and some of the moves were fantastic. The issue for Sheffield now could be massive, the Phoenix know from experience a groin injury to your goalie can mean an extended period without your number 1! Losing your import goalie is even worse, that's a fair wage packet sat out through injury. If it's a short term thing, Payette could take the view to take the hit and continue with Barkworth and really design their game plan around protecting him. If it's a long injury lay-off, money has to be found for a new starter. Barkworth himself displayed enough to suggest, with development, he could become an EPL starter, he has the skill, he just needs time and polish to improve. Chin up lad!

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 26th January Game Review
After the #phoenixtrain's momentary stop after the loss in Guildford, thursday night saw a chance to get the train rolling again. The visitors, the Sheffield Steeldogs. A team the Phoenix need no introduction too! Sheffield are a team who like to play physical hockey and, on many occasion, dirty hockey. If there is one team that sums up the darker side of the game its Sheffield. Led by the EPL's chief aggitator/good (depending on your viewpoint_ Andre Payette they are a tough nut to crack. Thursday nights game saw the Steeldogs give debut's to new import, and Ozonlins fellow Latvian countryman Raivis Kurnigins. The Steeldogs also welcomed Sheffield academy player Shaun Wild who will step up from U18 level and ice for the Steeldogs for the remained of the season.
So many questions going into the game, Was the Phoenix train having problems in the station? Is Sheffields new Latvian a taller Ozolins? and, how bad would the ref be?
First Period: In typical fashion the game began physcial, loads of hits and hard work filled the first period, if no goals did. Both teams were working hard to close the opposition down as early as possible. Both sets of defence keeping their centre ice clear and clearing all the rebounds given out by the keepers. Sheffield (really Payette/G Wood) looked to target the likes of Duggan and Harabin early on. Trying to draw them into penalties, but with no success. In fact, it was quite amusing watching Payette getting so wound up. Why does he always target players who are smaller than him? Who knows! The period ended with no goals and only a few clear cut chances for either side. But with both goalies being too good for straight on shots. The Phoenix/Steeldogs would have to be a bit more clever.
Second Period: In all honesty, much of what I said above also applied to the second period. No goals, lots of physical play, some shocking decisions from the ref, both in calls made but more those he missed. Also, some terrible linesman decisions too! A trend began to appear in the second too, I don't think we got through one faceoff without it being blown dead instantly and reset. I don't remember it happening so often in one game. Sheffield will probably regret two of the chances that came their way in the second period. On two occasions they had breakaway opportunities only for Foney to stonewall them both times. He really stood tall for the Phoenix and showed he is playing with so much confidence right now.
Third Period: Scoreless after 40mins of hockey something would have to give eventually. I don't think many in the Ice Dome wanted to still be there at midnight! The breakthrough came after 43mins when Tom Duggan drove to the net and forced home his own rebound underneath Ben Bowns. The Ice Dome erupted and the deadlock was broken. This really spurred the Phoenix on and they slowly began to exert some control over the Steeldogs. If the first goal was scrappy, the second was lucky! After a bit of a melee round Bowns goal the puck broke to the right to Ciaran Long who span round, and whipped a backhand on goal. Bowns got a piece of the puck, only to deflect it onto the crossbar and into the goal. Hey, you need luck sometimes! Andre called a time-out to regroup and push for some goals. In the 51st minute some lovely play from the Phoenix saw Koulikov break in on goal and unleash a monster of a slapshot past Ben Bowns making the score 3-0 Phoenix. Shortly after a nasty incident happend to Ben Bowns in the Sheffield goal. After a Phoenix attack and subsequent scrum it appeared a Sheffield play,accidentally, hit Bowns in the throat, which left him needing medical attention. Thankfully Ben got up and skated back to the bench under his own steam. With backup netminder Dimitri Zimozdra in goal and being up 3-0 the Phoenix eased off and saw out the game giving Fone a deserved shutout!
Verdict: I always enjoy a win over Sheffield, it shows you can win a game without resorting to the dark arts. Sheffield play hard, but I despise the way they play the game. A hard fought win and one that gets the #phoenixtrain rolling once more!

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 10th November Game Review
A rare midweek game for the Phoenix saw the visit of the Sheffield Steeldogs for another instalment of the cross Pennine battle. Andre Payette brought his Sheffield team to the Ice Dome riding high in the EPL table. He has forged a very tough team to beat, they work hard and grind out games, with their star player Janis Ozonlins getting much of the limelight. Of course any visit of the Steeldog's allows the Altrincham faithful to reacquaint themselves with messers Morgan/Geomeniuk/Wood and Payette! Always a pleasure!
Anyway Sheffield came into the game higher in the table and looking good to end their duck against the Phoenix in the EPL.
First Period: Off we go then, from the outset Sheffield brought their physicality and hard work to the ice, and the Phoenix struggled. While each team created chances the Phoenix were never able to set up in the Sheffield zone and put continued pressure on Ben Bowns in goal. Sheffield, on the other hand, were relying on their top line of Wood/Payette/Ozonlins to produce, as their most creative play came through them. As the period progressed and the Phoenix struggled the Steeldogs scored two quick goals to really take the initiative. The first came after 3 and a half minutes with Greg Wood returning to haunt the Phoenix. Less than a minute later, that man Ozonlins, popped up to extend their lead. Begrudgingly Sheffield deserved the lead so far.
Second Period: This period carried on where the first left off, with Sheffield continuing to frustrate the Phoenix, they had a plan and it was working. The Phoenix were able to haul themselves back into the game by scoring on a powerplay. I think the sun's must have aligned or something! Ladislav Harabin stepping up and scoring after 34min 27sec. A fight back on the cards? Sadly not, the mini-Payette Greg Wood struck again to restore Sheffield's two goal lead scoring at 35min 28sec. Sadly the hockey took a back seat in this period to the disgusting 'hit' by Payette on Luke Boothroyd. Im not going to rant on here, I said my piece below, on our forum and twitter and that's the last of it!
Third Period: With the scores at 3-1 and just twenty minutes left, I honestly didn't think the Phoenix had enough time to bring it back and, to be honest, I was still fuming after the events in the second. The period passed with the Phoenix tiring and the Steeldog's antics continuing. Only one goal came in the period, Ozonlins again scoring after 54min 25sec. As time ticket by it was clear Sheffield would finally get their win over the Phoenix at the 23rd time of asking.
Verdict: This was a poor performance from the Phoenix, we were outworked and looked tired and well off the pace. That's not to say Sheffield didn't play well, this defeat to Sheffield had been coming. Sheffield looked hungry and got their win....however! I can only say what I said on twitter after the game, Sheffield may have finally got their win against the Phoenix, but they deserve no praise/respect with the way they went about getting it. I have never seen a team play so dirty and dangerous in my time watching hockey. The clothes-line by Payette on Luke Boothroyd in the second period was disgusting and down right dangerous. He could seriously have inflicted major damage and it is by a sheer miracle that Luke's head was still screwed on. Greg Wood is fast becoming a mini Payette, which is a big shame, given he is a good player! That aside, the poor performance from the Phoenix and the lengthy injury list taking it's told, it's no surprise Sheffield managed, finally, to beat the Phoenix.

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs18th September Game Review - War of the Roses
The morning after the night before! The hockey season has well and truly begun! As is customary the Phoenix took on the Sheffield Steeldogs for the 'War of the Roses Cup' the now annual cross Pennine competition. This year would be different though, the Steeldogs have added a number of ex Phoenix players and have had a more extensive pre-season than the Phoenix. The team from Ice Sheffield had enjoyed games against Hull and the Steelers in addition to a hard training regime. The Phoenix had only been together a couple of days prior to leg one in Sheffield, so going into that game I would have been happy with a tied result or maybe a one or two goal deficit. Despite their head start I still thought the Phoenix would have enough quality over 6 periods to win.
So the usual crowd headed across to Sheffield to watch an entertaining game, filled with the usual physicality and controversy. After leaping to a 3-0 lead the Phoenix were able to fight back and took a 4-4 tie at the end of the first leg. This included an injury to Ciaran Long, and a bad slash to Harabin's arm. The incident with Long was the result of a knee from Gomeniuk which saw him assessed with a match penalty.

In the fading summer sun a bumper crowd packed out the Ice Dome sunday night ready to welcome the Phoenix onto home ice for the first time this season. Inside old acquaintances were renewed and old seats dusted off, everyone settled in for a cracking nights hockey.
First Period: With their extra on ice practice the Steeldogs started quickly and impressively, moving the puck quickly and giving the Phoenix a few defensive headaches! Ozonlins looking as good as before, Payette being his usual self and Morgan solid in defence. Greg Wood, captain of the Steeldogs, has seemingly morphed into a Payette Jnr unfortunately. Such a shame to see his talent wasted in such a way! The Phoenix looked ok to begin with, passes just missing to begin with and looked a little sloppy in defence, but as time went on both improved. Everyone forced to work hard, the new imports showing glimpses of their class. Bown's in goal was doing his usual one man wall impression, this season will, surely, be his last in the EPL! Fone was also in good form and both teams fought hard but were unable to score.
Second Period: The second continued where the first left off, except this time, the Phoenix were beginning to gel. The passes were sharper and the understanding on defence was getting there. After four minutes the duck was broken and it was the Phoenix who took the lead, after 24min 52sec. Koulikov, who could become my favourite player this season, took the puck up the right wing, turned in and riffled a lovely wrist shot past Ben Bowns and light the goal light. Sheffield called an immediate timeout, and Payette was seen absolutely laying into his Steeldogs players. Now I feel I must stand up for the Steeldogs players at this time. I can understand calling the time out as, the last 10mins of the first period and so far in the second it was clear the Phoenix were taking control. But that was no fault of the Steeldogs, it was just the Phoenix getting better and gelling! So I thought Payette's actions were a little un-called for! The Phoenix doubled their lead 4 minutes later when Faith got his first for the club, scoring at 28min 34sec. The newly bulked up Wallace was next on the scoresheet and gave the Phoenix a comfortable lead at 34min 55sec when he scored. Highlight move of the period which, didnt result in a goal actually, was Hand/Cingel and Faith breaking up ice 3 on 1 onyl to not score, who knows how! The buzzer sounded and capped an excellent period for the Phoenix, not only on the scoreboad, but Steeldogs heads were beginning to loose their cool, Payette and Wood in particular!
Third Period: This truly was an excellent period for the Phoenix, dominating the Steeldogs. At times it was both funny and embarrassing watching Payette loose the plot completely! Sadly for Foney the Steeldogs would break his shutout at score, after the third scrambled net attempt in the period. The Phoenix rode their luck one time too many and Sykes forced the puck through the bodies to reduce the deficit after 46min 22sec. Despite the score the Phoenix continued to dominate and it was no surprise when, with Bowns pulled, the Phoenix broke up ice and, after a few passes, Spelda was given the puck to score the empty netter at 58min 46sec. Capping a momentous day for him, news broke just before faceoff that he became a father for the first time!
Verdict: A great win, cracking atmosphere, the Dome was rocking once again! These games have been a perfect warm up for the league campaign. Early rust was long gone by the time Luke Boothroyd lifted the Roses Cup at the end. The team look to be gelling well, and after a week of training, should be read for the league campaign to begin. The new signing's look solid, and we really don't look to be missing Wood/Morgan and Gomeniuk. I know my good friend over at Banners on the Wall keeps saying that Koulikov is not import quality, but he doesn't have to be! He is a damn fine player in his own right. I think he could really be a star for the Phoenix! Spelda looks solid and intelligent in defence, a real quality partner for Harabin. Cingel looks to be re-establishing his long lost connection with Tony Hand, and Faith could well become one of the best forwards in the EPL. On the podcast Ben mentions his talk with Gomeniuk in the bar, where Pavel thinks the Phoenix have not replaced Kristoffersson. In my mind, we didnt have to! Anyone with a bit of quality on that topline could replace Kristoffersson. In Cingel/Faith I think we have a better first line than last year! There, ive said it!

So the usual crowd headed across to Sheffield to watch an entertaining game, filled with the usual physicality and controversy. After leaping to a 3-0 lead the Phoenix were able to fight back and took a 4-4 tie at the end of the first leg. This included an injury to Ciaran Long, and a bad slash to Harabin's arm. The incident with Long was the result of a knee from Gomeniuk which saw him assessed with a match penalty.

Playoff Quarter Final 2nd Leg - 3rd April Game Review
After a league title comes the hangover?
The Phoenix had the difficult task of re-focussing their efforts towards a possible EPL playoff final push, standing in their way was the not so insignificant spectre of Andre Payette and the Sheffield Steeldogs. Since Payette has taken over the Steeldogs have added more than a measure of...errr....steel? Prior to his arrival the Steeldogs would play hockey, and more often than not a comfortable win would be secured. However today they have added a whole new physical element to their game, with more than a helping of dodgy/illegal play to boot! For the Phoenix it has been very good at disrupting our usual style of play, the Phoenix have still been able to win, but it usually comes at a cost, with the Phoenix picking up a fair few injuries as a result of some questionable play by the Steeldogs!
Saturday's away trip to Sheffield saw a massive contingent of Phoenix fans head across the pennines, for me the key would be to stay healthy and keep the scores close. Well the Phoenix had other ideas, and skated out of Ice Sheffield with a 6-2 victory. Helped by Payette getting himself thrown out the game with a match penalty to boot. Meaning he would miss sunday's 2nd leg in Altrincham.
So the Phoenix faithful filled the Altrincham Ice Dome for one last time in the 2010-11 season to cheer on the guys to their second successive Coventry appearance. The Phoenix at full strength, the Steeldogs minus Payette!
First Period: With a 4 goal cushion from the first leg the Phoenix had to keep calm and nullify the Steeldogs offence. They had to look after Ozonlins and deal with the physical play, a task the Phoenix did very well during the opening 20 minutes. The Phoenix created most of the chances in the opening session, and the first goal would come for the Phoenix on the powerplay. At 13min 13sec the puck was cycled round to Tony Hand who stepped in off the blue line and, with no options, blasted a slap shot past Ben Bowns in goal. The man can shoot! James Archer doubled the advantage less than a minute later at 14min 01sec. After that, with the aggregate scores at 8-2 the game was done and dusted. So far Sharp had not been given any ice time, but his presence was enough to keep messers Grundmanis/Bebris quiet all game!
Second Period: Not alot happened in the second period, as the game wad done the Phoenix eased off and just kept the Steeldogs chances to the minimum. Tony Hand had changed into his civvies and was coaching from the bench for the period.
Third Period: With Tony Hand on the bench, and Kristoffersson taking an early night watching from the stands the Phoenix were not taking any risks. Even Sharp was rested, more needed in Coventry than getting a needless game/match penalty in this game! With the game won and progress assured the Phoenix eased up, it was perhaps down to this the Steeldogs got on the board. Their first of the night coming after 42minutes, I must apologise I didn't catch the scorer! At 44min 33sec Huppe stepped up to restore the Phoenix 2 goal lead making it 3-1 Phoenix. Wallace scored next with some superb play from the second line he just about forced the puck over the line at 48min 07sec. As the game wound down the Steeldogs would score the final goal of the game at 52min 44sec through Phoenix old boy Ryan Johnson. Thankful an upset was avoided the game ended 4-2 Phoenix and 10-4 on aggregate.
Verdict: A very tricky pair of games negotiated comfortably and professionally. The Phoenix dealt well with the Steeldogs play and closed out the series in fine style. Sheffield could have done better, but their player coach did it for them, getting thrown out in the first game. Im more happy that the Phoenix have come out the weekend with no serious injuries and, bar a few nocks, head to Coventry at full strength!
Attendance: A good crowd in the Dome, i'd guess around 1,000.

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 9th January Game Review
Last night saw the last visit of the Steeldogs to Altrincham for the EPL 10/11 season and, possibly, the last time some Phoenix fans would have the chance to see a Sharp v Payette dance. Coming into the game this dance had been thrown into doubt. The previous night, while the Phoenix toiled away in Swindon Sharp sustained quite a nasty injury that required a trip to A&E. The result, a very nice, but neat, cut down his chin. From the stories of how much blood there was, a delay in the game while the Zamboni came on, I was surprised to see Sharp take to the ice for warm up. But he is a tough little boy! Anyway, said game in Swindon, the Phoenix began brightly rushing to a 3-0 lead after the first period. Things began to go wrong, and heads must have been shaking as one by one Swindon pulled themselves back into the game. Only to take the lead going into the final stages. Thankfully the Phoenix came back and sent the game into OT, no further score and the second Swindon/Phoenix game would be, again, decided on penalty shots. Despite the previous shootout at the link center, the Phoenix would grab the extra point, James Archer this time turning hero.

This has happened a fair bit recently and needs addressing quickly before the Guildford double header next weekend! A win is a win though, and out title rivals have slipped up against the Wildcats too, so to get out with both points is welcomed! Sunday nights game against Sheffield should, he says, be a more simpler affair. Deal with Ozolins and effectively negate the Payette effect and you have Sheffield sorted, what would followed changed my view of the Steeldogs completely!

So, and as I have mentioned on the podcast many times, Sheffield resort to physical play. Only last night, that physicality went up to a whole new level! It was clear from the outset Sheffield were going to war on the ice, the level of intensity, hits and down right nasty cheap shot play they indulged in was shocking! Certainly the worst I have seen in the Ice Dome for a long time! During the first period Payette really upped his goonage and set out to try and intimidate the Phoenix smallest players on the Ice. Grundmanis really upped his pantomime villain status early on with some big late hits. In fact, a possible Sharp v Payette was dashed when a skate from Grundmanis caught Sharp o the back of his leg. I must admit this happened in a corner on our side of the ice so I didn't see it. But reports either say, he accidentally kicked Sharp, or deliberately stamped on his leg. Given how Grundmanis played all game im inclined to believe the latter sadly! This left Sharp in severe pain, limping off the ice and straight to A&E with a bad cut to his leg. Thankfully latest reports indicate he should be ok! So that's one man down! Tom Duggan and Ben Wood were also subject to some horrible boarding incidents as well, amongst others which could have resulted in bad injuries to players. You would be forgiven for thinking 'hold on, there was hockey wasn't there?' There was, but not much! Sheffield played a very good road game tactically, they filled the neutral zone which disrupted the usual smooth Phoenix transition up the ice. One goal was scored in the period, it came for the Phoenix when Stephen Wallace pounced on a defensive error behind the goal, to execute a fast wrap-around to beat Ben Bowns. That goal coming at 13min 41sec.
Second Period: Really continued much like the first! It really was a battle out on the ice with the Phoenix trying to play hockey and the Steeldogs trying to beat the Phoenix into submission! With the Phoenix on the penalty kill the Seeldogs scored with 3sec left on the powerplay through Edgar Bebris sending the away fans into raptures. Other than the tough physical play there was no further scoring in the second, only more penalty minutes. Andre Payette stepping up and taking a total of 14mins himself in one period!
A special comment for the period must go to the ref, a certain Mr Boardman. Now I never usually criticize referees on this blog, as I know I couldn't do the difficult job they do. However im sorry, he was awful in this period! From the first 20mins it was obvious this game would be very very very physical, lots of hitting but also, a lot of afters, cheapshots and down right dangerous play. It was ok in the first period, but Boardman did nothing to stop it, so in the second it began to cross the line into dangerous play! Sadly what happened in the third, he couldn't/wouldn't do anything to change that!
Third Period: This last period cemented my change in view on the Steeldogs! What they did in the 3rd was an utter disgrace! As previously mentioned, im ok with physical play when it is clean! How Sheffield played, it was most defiantly not! Payette and Grundmanis the leading culprits! Payette spent the whole game digging/cheapshotting the smallest players on the Phoenix roster, and Grundmanis put in some disgusting late hits and boarding hits. The worst, and the hit that has disgusted me with the way Sheffield played, was a massively dirty/late and awful hit Grundmanis put on Harabin. Mid ice in Sheffield's zone Harabin was moving towards the net, only to be checked, late, to the head by Grundmanis. This sent Harabin flying through the air, helmet coming off and onto the ice hard....not moving! It was clear he was out cold, in all my time watching hockey, it was a horrible horrible hit! One I hope the Phoenix ask the EIHA to review and subsequently ban Grundmanis! After a couple of minutes inaction, with the help of medical staff from both teams Harabin was sat up and responding. It was awful seeing him like that though, and that hit will linger with me for a long time! After much discussion Grundmanis rightly received a 5 plus match for check to the head! Quite frankly he should be out for a good few games! Wonder if we should leak the footage onto Youtube like Sheffield did re Sharp? You would be forgiven for thinking 'hold on, there was hockey wasn't there?' There was, but not much! Hold on, I feel like im repeating myself! Two goals were scored in the period. the Phoenix first at 44min 26sec when Kristoffersson put the puck home and make the scores 2-1. Sheffield hit back quickly when George Elliot tied the scores again at 47min 22sec. The scores would remain 2-2 at 60minutes and the two sides would play an extra 5 to see who got the extra point!
Overtime: Because Grundmanis and Payette were in the penalty box at the end of 60minutes the Phoenix would play most of the overtime 5 on 4 on the powerplay. But given our terrible powerplay efforts over the previous 60minutes, including two periods of 5 on 3, I wasn't expecting much! Payette was in the box on a 2+2+2 for cross checking, which he picked up with just 4 sec to go in the 3rd period. Anyway, the Phoenix did alot of huffing, but a slow powerplay began to frustrate the home crowd. Thankfully Curtis Huppe stepped up and scored the winner two minutes in the extra period, to seal both points and send the Steeldogs home!
Verdict: Shocked! The Phoenix did not play their best game, credit must go to Sheffield for filling the neutral zone and stopping the Phoenix play. All the credit gets wiped out however, with the way Sheffield conducted themselves! Very dirty, very dangerous and no sportsmanship what so ever! I have never, or at least for a long time, seen one team play so dirty, so dangerously in one game! Payette should have been ejected from the game, along with Grundmanis, who should also be banned for a good few games for the hit on Harabin. Sadly we did not have a strong enough referee to sort the game out either! Anyway, as for the Phoenix, a dirty/ugly win! But a win none the less, some on the forum are worrying about our current inability to sweep teams like Sheffield and Swindon. It concerns me, but im pleased that, despite not dominating both games over the weekend, we still won both! I still stand by my belief that last years team would have lost both games this weekend! The 10/11 Phoenix are tougher! It was so important to get the two points last night, with MK toppling Guildford and the Bees hammering the Bison, those two points mean the Phoenix head into next weeks double header with Guildford 5 valuable points clear!
Attendance: Down on the big crowd against MK but a good one anyway! I'd guess maybe a 1,000 in the Ice Dome.

Sheffield played a very good road game tactically, they filled the neutral zone which disrupted the usual smooth Phoenix transition up the ice. One goal was scored in the period, it came for the Phoenix when Stephen Wallace pounced on a defensive error behind the goal, to execute a fast wrap-around to beat Ben Bowns. That goal coming at 13min 41sec.
Second Period: Really continued much like the first! It really was a battle out on the ice with the Phoenix trying to play hockey and the Steeldogs trying to beat the Phoenix into submission! With the Phoenix on the penalty kill the Seeldogs scored with 3sec left on the powerplay through Edgar Bebris sending the away fans into raptures. Other than the tough physical play there was no further scoring in the second, only more penalty minutes. Andre Payette stepping up and taking a total of 14mins himself in one period!
A special comment for the period must go to the ref, a certain Mr Boardman. Now I never usually criticize referees on this blog, as I know I couldn't do the difficult job they do. However im sorry, he was awful in this period! From the first 20mins it was obvious this game would be very very very physical, lots of hitting but also, a lot of afters, cheapshots and down right dangerous play. It was ok in the first period, but Boardman did nothing to stop it, so in the second it began to cross the line into dangerous play! Sadly what happened in the third, he couldn't/wouldn't do anything to change that!
Third Period: This last period cemented my change in view on the Steeldogs! What they did in the 3rd was an utter disgrace! As previously mentioned, im ok with physical play when it is clean! How Sheffield played, it was most defiantly not! Payette and Grundmanis the leading culprits! Payette spent the whole game digging/cheapshotting the smallest players on the Phoenix roster, and Grundmanis put in some disgusting late hits and boarding hits. The worst, and the hit that has disgusted me with the way Sheffield played, was a massively dirty/late and awful hit Grundmanis put on Harabin. Mid ice in Sheffield's zone Harabin was moving towards the net, only to be checked, late, to the head by Grundmanis. This sent Harabin flying through the air, helmet coming off and onto the ice hard....not moving! It was clear he was out cold, in all my time watching hockey, it was a horrible horrible hit! One I hope the Phoenix ask the EIHA to review and subsequently ban Grundmanis! After a couple of minutes inaction, with the help of medical staff from both teams Harabin was sat up and responding. It was awful seeing him like that though, and that hit will linger with me for a long time! After much discussion Grundmanis rightly received a 5 plus match for check to the head! Quite frankly he should be out for a good few games! Wonder if we should leak the footage onto Youtube like Sheffield did re Sharp? You would be forgiven for thinking 'hold on, there was hockey wasn't there?' There was, but not much! Hold on, I feel like im repeating myself! Two goals were scored in the period. the Phoenix first at 44min 26sec when Kristoffersson put the puck home and make the scores 2-1. Sheffield hit back quickly when George Elliot tied the scores again at 47min 22sec. The scores would remain 2-2 at 60minutes and the two sides would play an extra 5 to see who got the extra point!
Overtime: Because Grundmanis and Payette were in the penalty box at the end of 60minutes the Phoenix would play most of the overtime 5 on 4 on the powerplay. But given our terrible powerplay efforts over the previous 60minutes, including two periods of 5 on 3, I wasn't expecting much! Payette was in the box on a 2+2+2 for cross checking, which he picked up with just 4 sec to go in the 3rd period. Anyway, the Phoenix did alot of huffing, but a slow powerplay began to frustrate the home crowd. Thankfully Curtis Huppe stepped up and scored the winner two minutes in the extra period, to seal both points and send the Steeldogs home!
Verdict: Shocked! The Phoenix did not play their best game, credit must go to Sheffield for filling the neutral zone and stopping the Phoenix play. All the credit gets wiped out however, with the way Sheffield conducted themselves! Very dirty, very dangerous and no sportsmanship what so ever! I have never, or at least for a long time, seen one team play so dirty, so dangerously in one game! Payette should have been ejected from the game, along with Grundmanis, who should also be banned for a good few games for the hit on Harabin. Sadly we did not have a strong enough referee to sort the game out either! Anyway, as for the Phoenix, a dirty/ugly win! But a win none the less, some on the forum are worrying about our current inability to sweep teams like Sheffield and Swindon. It concerns me, but im pleased that, despite not dominating both games over the weekend, we still won both! I still stand by my belief that last years team would have lost both games this weekend! The 10/11 Phoenix are tougher! It was so important to get the two points last night, with MK toppling Guildford and the Bees hammering the Bison, those two points mean the Phoenix head into next weeks double header with Guildford 5 valuable points clear!
Attendance: Down on the big crowd against MK but a good one anyway! I'd guess maybe a 1,000 in the Ice Dome.

Sheffield Steeldogs v Manchester Phoenix 30th December Game Review
Thursday 30th December saw the Phoenix and their fans head for the hills for an EPL game against the Sheffield Steeldogs, this game would see a re-run of Payette v Sharp, round two! Or would it? In the days after the hastily arranged Phoenix/Steeldogs game from a few days earlier, and the subsequent fights between Sharp/Payette, the Steeldogs had asked for a supplementary review. The league, after viewing fan footage from youtube, decided to hit Sharp with a two game ban, which would see him sit out the Sheffield/Phoenix game on the 30th Dec and the Phoenix/MK game on the 2nd Jan.
So this game would not see round two...unfortunately!
You will have to forgive me, the three game reviews I have planned for the blog may be a little light on detail as ive not written them after each game! But stay with me, I will try and give you as good a picture of each game as possible!
First Period: As ever with the Steeldogs you are sure of a tough fight, and with Ben Bowns returning in goal a difficult evening! It is important to get a goal past him as soon as possible to break the air of invincibility he sometimes exudes. Thankfully the Phoenix were able to take the lead fairly early on, and on the powerplay too! I know, the Phoenix scoring a powerplay goal!! Anyway the goal came from Marcus Kristoffersson after 7min 15sec. Phoenix doubled their lead about two minutes later when, Ben Wood was rewarded for his perseverance around the Steeldogs goal. His goal coming at 9min 10sec. The Phoenix third came just 42sec later at 9min 52sec when Curtis Huppe got his goal. The Phoenix now 3-0 up were able to relax a little and cruise. But Sheffield would remind them there was still plenty of hockey to be played. Sheffield scoring on the powerplay through their excellent new addition Janis Ozolins, that goal coming at 13min 21sec.
Second Period: The main aim for the period for the Phoenix must been to close out the game and not do anything stupid. Thankfully they didn't do anything stupid and were able to finish off the game. Just two goals came in the period, this was even despite ref Wardell deciding the Phoeinix should be on the penalty kill for the whole period more or less! The first goal came to James Archer on a penalty shot. Archer broke down the left wing, and was hauled down in front of goal, legitimate call and the right call. James took an excellent penalty shot, fast in and deaked Bowns to score, the goal coming at 36min 47sec. While on the aforementioned period long penalty kill, the Phoenix would score again through Tony Hand. Hand stayed high in the zone and received a breakout pass, again he showed his class to deak Bowns and make the score 5-1, the goal coming at 38min 06sec.
Third Period: With the game effectively over the Phoenix eased off in the third and set about their job of containing the Steeldogs. As a result not much of note happened! The only goal of the period came to the Phoenix when Kristoffersson got his second of the night at 46min 55sec on the powerplay.
Verdict: A professional performance from the Phoenix, Sheffield are a tricky side to play. Much like the Tigers, what they lack in skill as a whole they more than make up for in hard work and determination. Plus, in Ben Bowns they have a cracking goalie, and one star for the future! It was sad Sharpie could not play, and maybe as a result Payette had nothing to do, as a result he was pretty anonymous for most of the game. A real plus for the Steeldogs is the find of their new guy Janis Ozolins, this guy is fast and skillful. He got himself out of the clutches of the Phoenix players numerous times, and most Steeldogs offence came through him. The reffing was also a little peculiar, especially during the second period! Wardell called the Phoenix for 10 penalties in total, including a 5 plus match for Harabin for high sticks, putting him out of the Phoenix v MK game. Made even worse by suspected foul play by Grundmanis!
Attendance: Sheffield struggle with their attendances, and against the Phoenix the Steelers were also at home to the Coventry Blaze. Attendance was 584, with at least 200 Phoenix fans making the trip.
