The last weekend of games before christmas saw the Phoenix make the 'wonderful' journey to Peterborough saturday night. It has been a tumultuous time for the Phantoms recently. Coach sacked, Slava Koulikov coming in from Slough, bringing in a few players from the Hangar, some players leaving. So the best or worst time to play them? It would turn out to be a tough night for the Phoenix but, a night wich saw the away team grind out a shootout win. Worrying for Phoenix, an injury to Bakrlik saw him leave the game early.
Sunday saw current EPL champions the Guildford Flames come to the Ice Dome for their second visit of the season. The game would also be the second on the current Groupon offer so a larger crowd came to the Ice Dome. Guildford were suffering from a few injuries but, so were the Phoenix. Despite warming up Frankie Bakrlik did not ice for the game.
First Period: With the Dome rocking the puck dropped on the top of the table clash. Both teams had the prize of being number one at christmas at the end of the game. The first period saw a close chess like game from both teams, each getting some chances in on the goalies but nothing clear cut. Both Lee and Fone were keeping all early chances at bay. The officiating was, shall we say, questionable! For both teams in fact! We had a four man system in place but, as usual, that did not seem to improve the game!
Second Period: With an unusual goaless first period the second got off to a good start for the home side. With the Phoenix on the powerplay the home side set up in the Flames zone moving the puck around. With Hand on the puck, Boothroyd ghosted round the back of the Guildford box to the far post to tap in, un-challenged. Phoenix getting the first goal at 23min 54sec. The goal really ignited the atmosphere in this Pyro derby and the Ice Dome started rocking. The Phoenix started to exert some control in the game and extended their lead 4 minutes later. Michal Psurny getting the Phoenix second at 27min 26sec. Phoenix continued to control the game, with Duggan the most notable performer for the Flames. With 30sec to go in the period Robin Kovar capped off an impressive second stanza for the home team.
Third Period: 3-0 with one to go is a good position to be in but, you cannot count the Flames out. While they were missing Kristoffersson and Huppe there was still more than enough talent on that bench to get back into the game. The next goal would be crucial and, it was the Phoenix who got it. James Archer scoring a neat powerplay goal after some precise passing. The 4th goal coming at 48min 22sec. The Phoenix extended their lead soon after, you have to watch Phoenix TV for this one! Robin Kovar broke down the left win, held off a Flames player and slotted the puck past Lee for a beut of a goal at 49min 44sec. Flames heads visibly dropped and the game was done. The Phoenix had to work hard still to keep the Flames out, in an effort to give Fone the big SO! Robert Schnabel capped off an impressive victory with a booming slapshot from the blue line at 52min 01sec.
Verdict: Big crowd, big performance and a big win! Phoenix will be number one for Christmas! While the Flames bench was depleted that takes nothing away from a superb Phoenix performance. This will be a game the players and fans will savour!
Attendance: Biggest of the season probably, i'll guess at 1,800 in the Ice Dome.

Phoenix v Guildford Flames 13th October
The weekend just gone saw the Phoenix unbeaten start put under its sternest test yet. After going a perfect 8 and 0 the Phoenix had a weekend double header against, last seasons EPL Champions and the current 2nd placed team, the Guildford Flames. The Flames, as @jonthatcher pointed out, the Phoenix B team now contains many former Phoenix alumni:

Games between the two sides are eagerly anticipated as, both teams set out to play hockey. There is physicality but the hockey comes first. Both teams will play the game at speed, with skill, and for the full 60 minutes. I know I look forward to them! The first game of the weekend would see the Phoenix take to the Spectrum ice in Guildford. The game sounded like another corker, despite the low score in the end. It had, almost everything, a late penalty shot missed by the Phoenix and, a late late winner from a former Phoenix favourite. Duggan with the late goal to break Phoenix heats. The game finishing 3-2 Guildford.
Off we went to the Ice Dome for the return fixture in Altrincham. Some were nervous, I wasn't to be honest! I knew Phoenix/Flames games were entertaining and hockey would take the priority. I am ok losing to a team who wins by playing damn good hockey and, with Guildford, you know that's what you are going to get! Obviously I hoped we would win, I thought we could given how strong the team is this year but, you never know!
First Period: After a warm welcome back for Kristoffersson and Duggan the game got underway at its customary frenetic pace! The strength in depth on the Flames bench is something scary, three very strong lines can be iced and any team, ourselves included, have to be at their best. Thankfully the home side were and, while not dominating the game as they had so far this season, were able to compete with the Flames. Both sides played hard and some of the hockey on show was fantastic. The Phoenix took the lead at 6min 02sec when Tony Hand found some space and fired a low shot through Hadfield's 5-hole. This definitely fired up the Flames, who then began to pressure the Phoenix net. Guildford began to dominate the game and, were it not for some sloppy effort in front of goal, they would have been a few goals up. Duggan and Kristoffersson guilty of wasting some great chances. The Flames did get on the board and even up the game at 13min 18sec when Campbel scored finally getting the puck past Fone. Guildford continued to have the better chances but, the Phoenix were able to hold on and go into the interval tied at 1.
Second Period: The Phoenix needed to find their gears to get back into the game and to impose themselves on home ice. The break did the Phoenix good and, after getting back onto the Ice early were raring to go. The opening exchanges were relatively even again and, as a result, the two sides traded goals early in the period. Phoenix scored first through McKinnie with a great top corner finish at 21min 22sec, the joy was short-lived however, as under a minute later the Flames equalised...again! Former Phoenix player Tom Duggan with the goal at 22min 09sec. In truth it was a great goal from the Flames. Duggan was found bursting into the Phoenix zone and then lifted the puck, on his back hand, over Fone into the roof of the net. While the Phoenix were steadily edging the period the Flames would take their first lead of the game. Another former Phoenix man, Dean Holland scored the Flames go-ahead goal at 26min 57sec. The goal really snapped the Phoenix into gear as the goal provoked an un-answered three goal haul for the home side. Michal Psurny tied things up at 27min 55sec. Then, after the officials had finally realised there were two teams on the ice and called a penalty on the Flames, the Phoenix got a powerplay goal. The Flames were protecting the hash marks very well and Boother was taking some punishment in front of goal. Even so, he took a pass and, even with a heft check, managed to do a spin-o-rama, shoot, and find the bottom right corner. The goal put the Phoenix back in front, timed at 32min 51sec. With the scores at 4-3 the Phoenix scored again with 52 sec left on the clock, almost the perfect time to score. Robin Kovar getting the Phoenix 5th at 39min 08sec.
Third Period: The score 5-3, 20 minutes to go, this game was far from over. The late goal in the second was a massive boost for the Phoenix but, as fans across the EPL will know, Guildford are stacked with fire-power. Two goals would not be un-achievable for the Flames! The third began and the Phoenix kept on their improving form from the second period. They were able to compete and edge the play against the Flames, when the Flames did get chances they found Fone in top form. Both sides were still missing the odd chance which would usually be put away. The next goal would be crucial *ding* (taken from the hockey cliche book). The goal came for the home side and the Phoenix made it 6-3 at 50min 13sec when Michal Psurny got his second of the game. With the passing of each minute the noise began to rise as the home fans began to countdown the time with excitement. Guildford would act the villain one more time when Marcus Kristoffersson scored their 4th of the night at 56min 52sec, This years Phoenix team is made of sterner stuff when compared with vintage 12/13. Last years team could have succumbed to the pressure but not this years variety. There is much more resolve and determination in these boys. The game was sealed with two minutes to go when Psurny got his hat trick goal at 58min 05sec. That would be the last goal of the game and the Phoenix held on for the win!
Verdict: As mentioned at the beginning of this post, Phoenix/Flames games are anticipated highly by both fan bases and, this past weekend did not disappoint. If you have the time, make sure you look out for the highlights packages for both games this weekend. Some of the hockey played in Altrincham was fantastic! Guildford showed their awesome power in the first and were un-lucky not to have taken a lead into the first intermission. The new levels of determination from the Phoenix is a big reason why they couldn't! In fact with the Phoenix having the better of the second/third periods the scoreline in the end was a fair reflection. Tony managed to keep a lid on Bakrlik despite the intense provocation from the Flames. The Phoenix penalty kill performed very well and did not concede while, the powerplay unit made use of their one opportunity. In the end a hard fought and deserved win which keeps the Phoenix at the top of the pile.
Attendance: A good crowd came to watch the fun, i'll say about 1,200 in the Ice Dome.

Steady Eddies Return
After the excitement of the Phoenix first re-building announcement the Phoenix followed that up by announcing two returning Brit's to the roster. Captain fantastic and goal scoring machine Luke Boothroyd and hard man winger James Archer. Both players were always likely to return to the Phoenix but, especially in Boothroyd's case, there is always the worry the club will lose them to the EIHL.
Forward - James Archer
Despite a bit of a slow start James ended the 12-13 season with his highest season points tally with the Phoenix and, one of the highest in his career. He is not a flashy player or overly skillful but he packs one hell of a punch. Difficult to move off the puck, James has a good hockey mind to get in the right place at the right time. His 12/13 season finished with a point per game average, pretty good for a second line winger. Ideally I would like to see him edge up that average in the coming year.
Defence - Luke Boothroyd
Captain fantastic, returns for a 6th season with the Phoenix and, possibly, 5th as captain. One of the solid rocks in the EPL Luke gives the Phoenix such a cool/calm head on the blue line. Partnered with Schanbel he formed an impressive pairing. Not only known for his defencive abilities, 12/13 marked Luke out as being a danger on the powerplay. Intelligent with the puck Luke had a career year last year and really proved he could be one of the few Brit EPL players who could handle the step up to the EIHL.
So that's three forwards (four including Sir Toe Knee) and one defenceman announced so far. While there is a long way to go in terms of roster building, the Phoenix are looking good so far.
The time between this announcement and the writing of this blog post, the joy has been tempered somewhat by the news Tom Duggan will not be returning to the Phoenix for a fourth season. He was announced as a Guildford Flames player for the 13/14 season
I am gutted Tom has left but, as someone said on one of the hockey forums, 'he was only ever on loan at the Phoenix while at university up here' so, with his last exam completed I guess it was a matter of time before his return south. Tom has been a consistent performer for the Phoenix and definitely a player who plays for the badge on the front rather than the name on the back. Thanks for all your efforts Tom, you will always be welcome in Altrincham.

EPL 2011/12 Season Review - The Forwards
After a long delay its finally time to
draw a line under the 2011-12 season. Hilariously enough just a few
short weeks before the new season starts! My excuse is ive had a busy summer.
One long haul holiday to the other side of the world, getting engaged and
another trip away on business. Anyway all that is over and, aside from
wedding planning, it's time to get back into hockey mode. So, without further
ado, lets have a look at the forwards who, almost, fired the Phoenix to
back to back league titles!
Number 2, James Archer
James was one of a couple of players who took a few games to get it going in the EPL, that being said once he did get going he was his usual self. A fine hockey player who would enhance any roster he played on. James played the season tough and chipped in with good points throughout the year. The stats will show he was down on the previous season but, a groin injury - which he played through for the rest of the year, didn't help. Along with the entire Phoenix roster being on the physio table at one point or another. James is a player who I, and many other Phoenix fans, would hate to loose, and being a Sheffield lad, one I hope we don't!

Number 9, Tony Hand
If you look at Tony's career, 2011-12 will go down as his worst! Despite this Tony still averaged more than a point per game and his loss, was a major factor in the Phoenix relinquishing their grip on the EPL title. Injured half way through the season with a fractured ankle, which then took a very long time to heal, the Phoenix missed his creativity and leadership on the ice. When Tony did return to the ice in the flickering embers of the league campaign, it was amazing to see that, even at less than 100% he was still better than just about anyone else on the ice in the EPL! Tony was excellent, having him bench coach must have given him a view of his future, now more than ever Tony faces a massive question. Do I play on? For me, I hope he does!

Number 14, Stephen Wallace
Looking at the stats last season was a bit under par for Wally, my favourite player for the past couple of seasons Wally took a couple of games to get going, then a cruel wrist injury hampered the rest of his season. A player, for whom stick handling and skill is such a big part of his game, this was always going to impinge on his point production and effectiveness. Wallace is a player I would never tire of watching and would dearly love to have him back icing for the Phoenix but he has chose to return to Billingham. The move is a logical one for Wally, that's where he is from after all! Good luck Wally, The Angry Budgie and all Phoenix fans wish you the best!

Number 19, Tom Duggan
Tom's second season in Manchester was a real breakout season for the young lad. His best point production of his pro career Tom has cemented himself as a key player for the Phoenix. Another player who could walk into any EPL side, if the Phoenix were to loose him we would struggle. He really provides the energy behind the third line more often than not putting his body on the line. Only missing four games of the season Tom was one of the lucky few who stayed relatively healthy through the year. Scoring 5 points in the post season push Tom was a big factor in the Phoenix making it to the last day of the season in Coventry. Had we had a full roster for the season, his effort would have been rewarded with a shiny pot!

Number 29, Martin Cingel
Martin came to the Phoenix with a great pedigree, Martin single handily kept Edinburgh competitive for 9 years. So, in the EPL on the same line with Tony Hand, it was going to work out...right? Too right it did, his past season he nearly doubled his point production and recorded a career year. Martin was never the flashiest or, made the most noise, but he was effective. Im not sure on the likelihood of a second season, Cingel put up the points but, could the money bring in a better import? Either way Martin had a good year and stayed healthy throughout 2011-12, he should get a medal or something!

Number 71, Josh Ward
Josh had somewhat of a legacy to live up to. Coming to the Phoenix from the Panthers he follows Rob Lachowicz and James Neil in crossing to the Phoenix. His season, he never really stood out for me. He certainly works hard but his contribution on the third line wasn't quite enough. He is a player who will not be returning to the Phoenix as he has signed up for the Panthers. While I hope he can emulate Lacho's success, I cant see it myself. He was good, not great, at EPL level so I cant see him breaking in to an EIHL side this year. Personally he needs another year or two at EPL level before he will be ready! But, having said that, best of luck Josh!
Number 74, Slava Koulikov
Having come to the Phoenix from Slough to cut down on his commuting Dave Koulikov was quickly embraced by the Phoenix faithful for his positive attitude and 100% effort on the ice. I was really really happy when Slava signed for us, he was one of the EPL stars I wished played for my team. Slava contributed in a big way to the Phoenix second line and, had he played a full season, he could well have had another big year in terms of points. Definite re-sign for me! Sadly this won't happen, I had hoped, the reason for Slava coming to us, or one of them, was it would offer him a chance to play closer to home in Hull. Next season he will return to Slough, which defeats the point of that, but, he returns as player coach! Fair enough really! Thank you and good luck Slava, except for the 6 games against the Phoenix!

Number 89, Ciaran Long
Another debutante for the Phoenix Ciaran came to the Phoenix from the Bison. Ciaran is a player who I have admired in the EPL so he was another I was happy to see pull on the Phoenix jersey. Ciaran is one tough cookie and a guy who added much needed grit and determination to the Phoenix third line. A player who also became a fan favourite he would give his all every shift! For a tall skinny fella he can pack a punch, for many a fan his stand-out moment was winding Payette up in our playoff semi-final, taking him on and laughing his head off! Top marks fella!

Number 91, Juraj Faith
The final import signing of last summer is traditionally the sniper. Faith came to the Phoenix with that billing and expectation. For some Phoenix fans it took a while to warm up to Juraj but for me, I liked him. Despite his age Juraj had masses of pace, a wicked wrist shot and a wise hockey brain. A centre man who, because we already had Tony Hand, had to play on the wing many fans thought he struggled, and only came into his own with Tony out injured. There was some truth to that, with both on the ice there could be a few too many passes, but the puck would eventually go in the net. Juraj impressed me but he is not to have a second season in Mancheser. He returns to the team he played for in Germany EHC Freiburg this time in the German third tier.

A player, for whom stick handling and skill is such a big part of his game, this was always going to impinge on his point production and effectiveness. Wallace is a player I would never tire of watching and would dearly love to have him back icing for the Phoenix but he has chose to return to Billingham. The move is a logical one for Wally, that's where he is from after all! Good luck Wally, The Angry Budgie and all Phoenix fans wish you the best!

Number 19, Tom Duggan
Tom's second season in Manchester was a real breakout season for the young lad. His best point production of his pro career Tom has cemented himself as a key player for the Phoenix. Another player who could walk into any EPL side, if the Phoenix were to loose him we would struggle. He really provides the energy behind the third line more often than not putting his body on the line. Only missing four games of the season Tom was one of the lucky few who stayed relatively healthy through the year. Scoring 5 points in the post season push Tom was a big factor in the Phoenix making it to the last day of the season in Coventry. Had we had a full roster for the season, his effort would have been rewarded with a shiny pot!

Number 29, Martin Cingel
Martin came to the Phoenix with a great pedigree, Martin single handily kept Edinburgh competitive for 9 years. So, in the EPL on the same line with Tony Hand, it was going to work out...right? Too right it did, his past season he nearly doubled his point production and recorded a career year. Martin was never the flashiest or, made the most noise, but he was effective. Im not sure on the likelihood of a second season, Cingel put up the points but, could the money bring in a better import? Either way Martin had a good year and stayed healthy throughout 2011-12, he should get a medal or something!

Number 71, Josh Ward
Josh had somewhat of a legacy to live up to. Coming to the Phoenix from the Panthers he follows Rob Lachowicz and James Neil in crossing to the Phoenix. His season, he never really stood out for me. He certainly works hard but his contribution on the third line wasn't quite enough. He is a player who will not be returning to the Phoenix as he has signed up for the Panthers. While I hope he can emulate Lacho's success, I cant see it myself. He was good, not great, at EPL level so I cant see him breaking in to an EIHL side this year. Personally he needs another year or two at EPL level before he will be ready! But, having said that, best of luck Josh!
Number 74, Slava Koulikov
Having come to the Phoenix from Slough to cut down on his commuting Dave Koulikov was quickly embraced by the Phoenix faithful for his positive attitude and 100% effort on the ice. I was really really happy when Slava signed for us, he was one of the EPL stars I wished played for my team. Slava contributed in a big way to the Phoenix second line and, had he played a full season, he could well have had another big year in terms of points. Definite re-sign for me! Sadly this won't happen, I had hoped, the reason for Slava coming to us, or one of them, was it would offer him a chance to play closer to home in Hull. Next season he will return to Slough, which defeats the point of that, but, he returns as player coach! Fair enough really! Thank you and good luck Slava, except for the 6 games against the Phoenix!

Number 89, Ciaran Long
Another debutante for the Phoenix Ciaran came to the Phoenix from the Bison. Ciaran is a player who I have admired in the EPL so he was another I was happy to see pull on the Phoenix jersey. Ciaran is one tough cookie and a guy who added much needed grit and determination to the Phoenix third line. A player who also became a fan favourite he would give his all every shift! For a tall skinny fella he can pack a punch, for many a fan his stand-out moment was winding Payette up in our playoff semi-final, taking him on and laughing his head off! Top marks fella!

Number 91, Juraj Faith
The final import signing of last summer is traditionally the sniper. Faith came to the Phoenix with that billing and expectation. For some Phoenix fans it took a while to warm up to Juraj but for me, I liked him. Despite his age Juraj had masses of pace, a wicked wrist shot and a wise hockey brain. A centre man who, because we already had Tony Hand, had to play on the wing many fans thought he struggled, and only came into his own with Tony out injured. There was some truth to that, with both on the ice there could be a few too many passes, but the puck would eventually go in the net. Juraj impressed me but he is not to have a second season in Mancheser. He returns to the team he played for in Germany EHC Freiburg this time in the German third tier.

Phoenix v Swindon Wildcats 8th April Playoff Game Review
The regular season is consigned to the
memory, its now all about the playoffs!
After securing second place in the league
campaign the Phoenix now had to turn their attentions to the small matter
of a playoff quarter final against the in-form Swindon Wildcats. They are
a team the Phoenix have struggled with, especially down in Swindon, for
the early part of the year. Thankfully the Phoenix had started to turn
that around and, on their last visit to Swindon, came away with a win.
Could they do it again?
Thankfully they could, to have any chance in this series the Phoenix needed to come out of Swidon with at least a tie or only with a one goal deficit. They did even better, and came out the weekend with a 2-1 lead. Who fancies doing it all again in Altrincham then?
First Period: The Phoenix started the game with a point to prove, Swindon may be the form team but, the Phoenix are even better. The early stages were dominated by the Phoenix. The home side shutting down the likes of Nell and Hoog. The early tension was eased when the Phoenix got the early lead, James Archer was found in some space at the hash marks to fire a quick snapshot to give the Phoenix the lead. That goal coming at the 8min mark. The goal really settled the Phoenix and they continued to dictate the game. Swindon were contributing to the game in a big way, putting up a stern wall for the Phoenix to get through. They worked hard, protected their goalie but, maybe because of this, didn't offer much in the Phoenix zone. That being said, when they did get a chance on goal they found Fone in awesome form.
Second Period: The second period continued where the first left off, with the Phoenix continuing to pressure the Swindon goal. The first ten minutes of the period would effectively seal the game and the Phoenix progression to Coventry. Tom Duggan found Archer with a lovely breakout pass early after the re-start and Archer got his second of the game at 21min 03sec. Giving the Phoenix a three goal cushion over the two legs. As the game continued Swindon upped the aggresion and the Phoenix responded. In fact, it was a response that would get the Phoenix another goal. With a man in the penalty box Tom Duggan grabbed a short handed goal when the Wildcats play broke down on the blue line. 3-0 Phoenix on the night after 27min 12sec. The tie was assured two minutes later when Stephen Wallace got the Phoenix fourth at 29min 12sec.
Third Period: After the awesome atmosphere in the first/second period the third was a little flat. The game, 4-0 Phoenix and 5-1 over the two legs was over and the two clubs played out the last 20 minutes with less intensity. The odd chance was created, and the Cats swapped netties for the final session, but no goals came from the final period. With two minutes to go the crowd rose to its feet to salute the Phoenix and warm up for Coventry,
Verdict: A very slippy potential banana skin avoided over these two games. The first leg down in Swindon had a massive effect on the weekend. I think the Wildcats believed a win down at the link centre could hand them the tie. But the Phoenix win, and early goal in the first period killed off a lot of their momentum. That being said the first two periods in Altrincham saw some brilliant hockey. Swindon were good, but the Phoenix were better.
Attendance: A good crowd for the final home game, i'll say 1,400 in the Ice Dome.

Phoenix v MK Lightning 19th February Game Review
After the EPL Cup Semi-Final game versus the Guildford Flames the Phoenix faced the second of their tough weekend double header, against the MK Lightning. Games against MK are always tough, even though going into this game the Phoenix held a 4-1 series lead over the MK Lightning, the game would not be given to the Phoenix. MK are a skilful side but, will often sacrifice that side of the game for physicality if the result is going the wrong way. The Phoenix would need to win, if only to keep up the pressure on Guildford but, to also increase the space versus one of their title rivals. The key for the Phoenix would be to hit the ground running and get a goal early. Mettam/Hollyhead are very good goalies but, prone to mental walkabout's/shaky confidence if you score on them early!
First Period: The Phoenix exploded out the blocks and caught MK completely off guard. That, along with MK possibly underestimating the level of physicality the Phoenix could play with, saw the home side almost seal the game in the first ten minutes. By the 9th minute in the game the Phoenix were three goals to the good. After just 129 seconds Ciaran Long notched another for the third line and got the Phoenix rolling. Juraj Faith got the first points for the top line after 6min 05sec and Tom Duggan capped off the awesome start just before the 9th minute. MK called a time-out the steady the ship, no doubt reeling from the impressive start for the Phoenix. MK slowly got into gear and got up to speed over the remaining 10 minutes of the period. With the home side 3-0 up, all the Phoenix had to do for the rest of the game was to match MK.
Second Period: This was a more competitive period of hockey, the MK players had now got rid of their bus legs and had the proverbial fired up their backside during the first intermission. In many ways the next goal was key, MK score it and they are back in the game with a sniff, Phoenix get it and the mountain gets even bigger for MK. So, the Ice Dome erupted just under two minutes into the second period when Harabin scored at 21min 51sec to extend the Phoenix lead to 4. Chances were more restricted during the period and, finally, some pressure from MK would yield a goal. Grant McPherson scoring MK's first goal at 26min 50sec. No further goals followed in the period and the period ended 1 goal a piece.
Third Period: So MK had just 20mins to overturn the deficit, the initial exchanges in the final session mirrored that during the second period. A few clear chances but both goalies were in good form. MK had a spell of good possession and control and newboy Tikkanen scored their second of the game at 53min 32sec. The score now stood at 4-2 which got MK going. Towards the end of the game MK became more frantic in search of the elusive two goals to force OT. The Phoenix stood firm, Boother and the rest of the defensive corps working hard to limit the clear chances and help Fone out on any rebound. Going into the final 90 seconds the Phoenix picked up a penalty to give MK the advantage, James Neil heading to the box. With a minute to go Hollyhead was pulled giving MK a 6 on 4. MK cycled the puck well but the Phoenix closed the shooting lanes then, with Martin Cingel high in the zone, the puck broke to him and he scored the empty net insurance goal with 30sec left in the game.
Verdict: A great win for the Phoenix. MK Lightning always offer a stern examination of the Phoenix but, this year, the Phoenix seem to have their number. Especially at home in Altrincham. The valuable two points increases the game versus the Lightning and means the Phoenix end the series with 5 wins to MK's one.
Attendance: A pretty good crowd in the Ice Dome with a large away following. Im going to say 1,100 in!

Phoenix v Telford Tigers 11th February Game Review
Last weekends hockey action was back-to-front for the Phoenix, a home game saturday night to the Tigers followed by a tough away game to the Steeldogs sunday night. The Tigers are struggling this season but, one thing you know you will get from them is a tough ride. With Declan Ryan in goal the Tigers always have a chance in their games, but the team in front tend to allow alot of shots! You can be the best keeper in hockey but, the law of averages says your going to conceed. This years Tigers have not been helped by lacking their full import quota and a recent new import jumping ship before he'd even iced! Poor form on his part!
Anyway the Tigers came to the Ice Dome to take on the Phoenix on a cold saturday night in Altrincham.
First Period: The contest began with the Phoenix making the early headway only to find Ryan in his usual top form. Roared on be the hardy few from Telford the Tigers tried to assert some pressure but were not able to string together a concerted period of pressure. Thinking about the Tigers fans from saturday night, thank you for coming and supporting your team, but when you chant could you sound like your saying Tigers a little more than Slough Jets please? Thanks! Anyway the Phoenix broke the deadlock when Koulikov scored at 8min 07sec during a period of 4 on 4 hockey. Harabin doubled the lead at 14min 53sec when a shot from the blue line found its way in while no one else saw it! The reaction from the goal light going on to the crowd cheering was hilarious! Cingel made it a comfortable 3-0 lead for the Phoenix just before the break at 18min 26sec. The game result looking inevitable even at this early stage.
Second Period: To get an idea of what the second period was like, re-read the paragraph above! Phoenix got the early goal in the period at 22min 27sec when Ryan Johnson got a rare goal venturing forward. Tom Duggan underlined his excellent season so far with a short handed effort at 29min 20sec. This goal really knocked the stuffing out of the Tigers and heads did go down. Duggan would get his second, the Phoenix sixth, at 37min 39sec and it really was a goal of beauty, one to check Phoenix TV for!
Third Period: Telford changed netminders at the beginning of the third period with Greg Blais coming in for Ryan, Blais was great for the Tigers, he really tried to direct from the goal and gee the team up. Sadly it didn't have much effect! The Phoenix scored first in the period when Josh Ward got his first in Phoenix colours at 46min 05sec. Approaching the 9min mark in the period it was the Phoenix turn to change netminders and, for the second home game in a row, El-Hage came on to get some valuable ice time. The Phoenix scoring continued and Ciaran Long was the next to score at 49min 03sec. Juraj Faith got the Phoenix 9th of the game at 50min 41sec and after a Phoenix timeout the home side eased off. El-Hage worked hard in goal and looked to be enjoying his time out on the ice, sadly he couldn't hold out for the S/O and the Tigers did find a breakthrough with Tomas Janak getting the Tigers on the board.
Verdict: A big 9-1 win for the Phoenix and in the end, a comfortable win. The Tigers did look quite demoralised in the third period, and I don't know what their solution is. Tigers games so far this season have been characterised by their hard work and in-your-face attitude. Last saturdays fame didn't have much of that, maybe that was the key for them. The weekend didn't turn out well for Telford, as they suffered a second heavy loss to the Phantoms sunday night.

Phoenix v Sheffield Steeldogs 26th January Game Review
After the #phoenixtrain's momentary stop after the loss in Guildford, thursday night saw a chance to get the train rolling again. The visitors, the Sheffield Steeldogs. A team the Phoenix need no introduction too! Sheffield are a team who like to play physical hockey and, on many occasion, dirty hockey. If there is one team that sums up the darker side of the game its Sheffield. Led by the EPL's chief aggitator/good (depending on your viewpoint_ Andre Payette they are a tough nut to crack. Thursday nights game saw the Steeldogs give debut's to new import, and Ozonlins fellow Latvian countryman Raivis Kurnigins. The Steeldogs also welcomed Sheffield academy player Shaun Wild who will step up from U18 level and ice for the Steeldogs for the remained of the season.
So many questions going into the game, Was the Phoenix train having problems in the station? Is Sheffields new Latvian a taller Ozolins? and, how bad would the ref be?
First Period: In typical fashion the game began physcial, loads of hits and hard work filled the first period, if no goals did. Both teams were working hard to close the opposition down as early as possible. Both sets of defence keeping their centre ice clear and clearing all the rebounds given out by the keepers. Sheffield (really Payette/G Wood) looked to target the likes of Duggan and Harabin early on. Trying to draw them into penalties, but with no success. In fact, it was quite amusing watching Payette getting so wound up. Why does he always target players who are smaller than him? Who knows! The period ended with no goals and only a few clear cut chances for either side. But with both goalies being too good for straight on shots. The Phoenix/Steeldogs would have to be a bit more clever.
Second Period: In all honesty, much of what I said above also applied to the second period. No goals, lots of physical play, some shocking decisions from the ref, both in calls made but more those he missed. Also, some terrible linesman decisions too! A trend began to appear in the second too, I don't think we got through one faceoff without it being blown dead instantly and reset. I don't remember it happening so often in one game. Sheffield will probably regret two of the chances that came their way in the second period. On two occasions they had breakaway opportunities only for Foney to stonewall them both times. He really stood tall for the Phoenix and showed he is playing with so much confidence right now.
Third Period: Scoreless after 40mins of hockey something would have to give eventually. I don't think many in the Ice Dome wanted to still be there at midnight! The breakthrough came after 43mins when Tom Duggan drove to the net and forced home his own rebound underneath Ben Bowns. The Ice Dome erupted and the deadlock was broken. This really spurred the Phoenix on and they slowly began to exert some control over the Steeldogs. If the first goal was scrappy, the second was lucky! After a bit of a melee round Bowns goal the puck broke to the right to Ciaran Long who span round, and whipped a backhand on goal. Bowns got a piece of the puck, only to deflect it onto the crossbar and into the goal. Hey, you need luck sometimes! Andre called a time-out to regroup and push for some goals. In the 51st minute some lovely play from the Phoenix saw Koulikov break in on goal and unleash a monster of a slapshot past Ben Bowns making the score 3-0 Phoenix. Shortly after a nasty incident happend to Ben Bowns in the Sheffield goal. After a Phoenix attack and subsequent scrum it appeared a Sheffield play,accidentally, hit Bowns in the throat, which left him needing medical attention. Thankfully Ben got up and skated back to the bench under his own steam. Verdict: I always enjoy a win over Sheffield, it shows you can win a game without resorting to the dark arts. Sheffield play hard, but I despise the way they play the game. A hard fought win and one that gets the #phoenixtrain rolling once more!
Attendance: Midweek games never do much to generate a big crowd, but a decent turnout saw to a good atmosphere. I would say maybe 7-800 in the Ice Dome.

So many questions going into the game, Was the Phoenix train having problems in the station? Is Sheffields new Latvian a taller Ozolins? and, how bad would the ref be?
First Period: In typical fashion the game began physcial, loads of hits and hard work filled the first period, if no goals did. Both teams were working hard to close the opposition down as early as possible. Both sets of defence keeping their centre ice clear and clearing all the rebounds given out by the keepers. Sheffield (really Payette/G Wood) looked to target the likes of Duggan and Harabin early on. Trying to draw them into penalties, but with no success. In fact, it was quite amusing watching Payette getting so wound up. Why does he always target players who are smaller than him? Who knows! The period ended with no goals and only a few clear cut chances for either side. But with both goalies being too good for straight on shots. The Phoenix/Steeldogs would have to be a bit more clever.
Second Period: In all honesty, much of what I said above also applied to the second period. No goals, lots of physical play, some shocking decisions from the ref, both in calls made but more those he missed. Also, some terrible linesman decisions too! A trend began to appear in the second too, I don't think we got through one faceoff without it being blown dead instantly and reset. I don't remember it happening so often in one game. Sheffield will probably regret two of the chances that came their way in the second period. On two occasions they had breakaway opportunities only for Foney to stonewall them both times. He really stood tall for the Phoenix and showed he is playing with so much confidence right now.
Third Period: Scoreless after 40mins of hockey something would have to give eventually. I don't think many in the Ice Dome wanted to still be there at midnight! The breakthrough came after 43mins when Tom Duggan drove to the net and forced home his own rebound underneath Ben Bowns. The Ice Dome erupted and the deadlock was broken. This really spurred the Phoenix on and they slowly began to exert some control over the Steeldogs. If the first goal was scrappy, the second was lucky! After a bit of a melee round Bowns goal the puck broke to the right to Ciaran Long who span round, and whipped a backhand on goal. Bowns got a piece of the puck, only to deflect it onto the crossbar and into the goal. Hey, you need luck sometimes! Andre called a time-out to regroup and push for some goals. In the 51st minute some lovely play from the Phoenix saw Koulikov break in on goal and unleash a monster of a slapshot past Ben Bowns making the score 3-0 Phoenix. Shortly after a nasty incident happend to Ben Bowns in the Sheffield goal. After a Phoenix attack and subsequent scrum it appeared a Sheffield play,accidentally, hit Bowns in the throat, which left him needing medical attention. Thankfully Ben got up and skated back to the bench under his own steam. Phoenix v MK Lightning 15th January Game Review
The Phoenix went into last weekend on the back of an impressive 6 game winning streak, all thoughts of the early season troubles banished in many a keyboard warriors mind! ;-) The Phoenix, still without Tony Hand welcomed back Tom Duggan for the weekends games and, with Stephen Wallace back playing meant last seasons champions are just the one man short of a full roster. A trip to Bisonland saturday night, and an impressive 5-0 victory was followed by hosting the MK Lightning in Altrincham. An easy weekend to continue the streak, haha, this is the EPL, as if!
After a superb 5-0 win in Basingstoke the Phoenix faced the, not so insignificant task of the MK Lightning. A very talented team, ex EPL league winners, and a team that will always score. The Lightning always bring good away support and, with a fair number of fans filling the away block and a large home crowd, everyone settled in for another entertaining game.
First Period: The last time these two teams met in Altrincham it looked like MK were still on the bus. The Phoenix came out strong and dominated MK, this time was different. It was obvious Nick Poole was not going to let the same thing happen twice (insert applicable Lightning striking cliche here!). The opening session was played hard and physical with neither team really dominating the opening exchanges. The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first with Tom Duggan cementing his excellent return to the line up scoring a lovely goal after 96 seconds.....really must get him back in my fantasy Phoenix team! The Lightning kept in touch scoring their first before the game was three minutes old. Adam Carr levelling the game after 2min 51sec. This is about the time the Mr Boardman show took over, im not one for criticising referee's but (that's ironic) he was terrible. So many missed calls, dangerous ones too, he was awful for both teams. With the Phoenix on a penalty kill Tom Duggan stepped up and scored a wonderful Short Handed breakaway goal putting the Phoenix 2-1 up after 16min 43sec.
Second Period: A response from MK was assured, the Phoenix had dealt well with their aggression and play so far. The second period would turn out to be, almost, one long penalty kill for the Phoenix. As Mr Boardman's calls become more and more ridiculous! Phoenix won period one 2-1 MK would win this period by the same score. Juraj Gracik scored the levelling goal on the power play at 25min 04sec. Before the game reach the half way mark Juraj Faith got his first of the night putting the Phoenix ahead once more, at 29min 25sec. While the crowd were celebrating the Lightning hit right back and tied the game, once again, through Grant McPherson scoring at 30min 44sec. Not a classic period, the constant flow of penalties put paid to that! So 3-3 and heading into the final period, all to play for!
Third Period: 20mins of hockey would see the winner take the game Would it be the Phoenix, to extend their streak and the series hold over MK. Or would the Lightning halt the run and pull level in the series with the Phoenix? The Phoenix got the best start scoring the first goal of the period, Ben Wood stepping up and showing that, shooting a puck on net pays dividends some times. His hard/low shot from the blue line found its way under Mettam's legs and dribbled over the goal line. The Phoenix 4th goal coming at 44min 35sec. The next two goals for the Phoenix sealed the game and offered the respective players some payback for the 'attention' they had been getting from MK all game. Firstly #moveslikespelda got his goal at 47min 55sec on the powerplay and offered a salute to the fans. His rocket of a shot finding the net, he really does have an awesome slapshot! The biggest cheer of the game came for the next, and last, goal of the game. Ladislav Harabin scoring the 6th of the night on the powerplay again with a rocket from the blue line at 51min 22sec. With the Phoenix 6-3 up and MK not willing to pull Mettam the game finished with a 6-3 Phoenix victory.
Verdict: A tougher test this time from MK, but the Phoenix rose above all the on ice agitating to record another satisfying win over MK. Tom Duggan returned and looked like he had never been off the ice. One big big satisfaction from this game, and from the Bison game is the Phoenix secondary scoring. This has been excellent the past few games and is a big reason for the ongoing streak the Phoenix are enjoying. Half the Phoenix goals last night came from the Phoenix third line through Duggan and Wood. Big credit to that line!
Attendance: A big one again, a few newbies and groups swelling the numbers, so I will say 1,500 in the Ice Dome.

Phoenix v Milton Keynes Lightning 18th December Game Review
MK visited the Ice Dome sunday night for another installment of their rivalry with the Phoenix. So far, since the arrival into the EPL the Phoenix/MK battles have always been a highlight for me. Two teams who like to play hockey, and are a joy to watch. Plus the MK faithful always travel in numbers and make plenty of noise. Last sunday was no exception! Prior to sundays action the Phoenix traveled south to Slough and the result.....well.....less said about that the better!
Anyway onto the MK game:
First Period: I will admit, going into this game I was not expecting much for the Phoenix, I expected us to come out of the game empty handed! How wrong could I have been? The spanking down in Slough looked like it hurt the Phoenix, and they came out fighting against MK. The game started fast, it started physical, some bi hits being handed out. The likes of Harabin, Spelda, Wood and Long meeting out some great hits. It would be the Phoenix third line that got the first goal. A real beaut it was too! Hard work from Duggan down the left wing created a 2 on 1 with Ciaran Long, Tom found Ciaran and Ciaran scored the first goal of the game. The joy in the celebration was matched by the joy in the stands. A real reward for those two who work hard on each and every shift. That first goal coming at 7min 36sec. The Phoenix continued to press and another goal followed, Martin Cingel getting in on the act scoring at 11min 55sec. The period continued much the same with both teams battling and the fans in the stands creating a memorable atmosphere! The period ended 2-0 Phoenix, but the dreaded second period was up next!
Second Period: After the Phoenix edged the first, much to MK's surprise, MK upped their game in the second and it proved to be an even contest. The same hard flowing hockey continued and it really was great to watch. Each and every fan getting their moneys worth! Only one goal came in the period and it came to MK, Jamieson scoring at 26min 06sec.
Third Period: With just one goal in it the Phoenix had to expect MK to come hard in the final session. They did and on the PP were able to tie the game. An excellent PP with MK moving the puck around quickly and that man, Jamieson again, popped up to score the game tying goal, at 46min 07sec. Despite being pegged back, the Phoenix showed no signs of caving in, regrouped and began to re-assert their stamp on the game. Going into the last 10minutes the Phoenix would seal the game. Martin Cingel scoring his second of the night at 52min 19sec then his hattrick goal following at 57min 41sec. This one a real killer, as Cingel threw the puck on net from the red line, and found the smallest game between Mettam's pads and the post. Cue delirium in the stands.
Verdict: Having lost the previous 3 homes games and an absolute spanking in Slough the night before the mood in the Ice Dome was tense. But the fans rose to the occasion and created an awesome atmosphere. The MK faithful did their bit and contributed to a fantastic nights entertainment, and the teams rose to it too. Phoenix/MK is a battle that cannot be missed. The Phoenix put in a performance we knew they could do, but for some reason couldn't so far this season. The 9-0 in Slough the catalyst for an awesome response sunday night. The Phoenix played fast, skillful and hard, they put in lots of hits and harassed the MK players all game. As a result they could own the ice. This was a big game for the Phoenix and the fans, and neither disappointed!
Attendance: Great crowd, great noise, with the extra away fans in, ill guess at 1,200 in the Ice Dome.

Phoenix v Guildford Flames 11th December Game Review
The Flames came to the ice dome saturday night and in doing so, brought back Phoenix favourites Curtis Huppe and Andrew Sharp to Altrincham. Going into the game the Phoenix form suggested this would be a walkover for Guildford although, having said that, the Phoenix usually play better on a saturday now! Even so, with the Phoenix hit by injuries, although boosted by three Metro's ENL players joining the bench, the Phoenix would still be understaffed against a strong Flames roster. How the Phoenix would love to have the luxury of 'extra' players sitting around to bring in! Anyway, games against the Flames have always been fun, as they are a team, like the Phoenix, who like to play hockey.
First Period: The first period started and continued with some great end to end hockey, both sides working hard but Guildford did edge the opening exchanges. Enjoying the greater of the possession the Flames began to increase the pressure on the Phoenix, and their slick style began to open up holes in the Phoenix defence. So it was no surprise that the Flames took the lead, Branislav Kvetan opening the scoring at 10min 09sec. Nathan Rempel doubled their lead less than four minutes later at 13min 42sec. Even at this early stage it looked like lights out for the Phoenix. But, count them out at your peril, current Phoenix hero Tom Duggan finally got the Phoenix on the board when his perseverance was rewarded with a goal, coming at 17min 23sec.
Second Period: The second started in the worst possible way when the Flames, on the power play, extended their lead. The usual PP format so far was, the Phoenix being unable to set up in the Flames zone when enjoying the man advantage, and the Flames set up and camped in the Phoenix zone. The goal, brilliantly worked, came from ex Phoenix sniper Curtis Huppe. Scoring just 23sec into the period. At 2min 53sec Rick Plant extended Guildford's lead to 4-1, a massive mountain for the Phoenix to climb to get anything from this game. Astonishingly the Phoenix powerplay worked and the deficit was cut by one goal as Cingel scored at 12min 40sec. Despite the scoreline so far, the Phoenix had maintained their effort during this game, which marked a nice change from recent home games.
Third Period: This got interesting in the third period, as Guildford had done in the second, the Phoenix scored a quick goal to make it tense. Ciaran Long, like Tom Duggan, getting a reward for his tireless performances scoring 47sec into the final session. The large crowd in the dome picked up and the atmosphere really got rocking. Iv'e never been to the Spectrum but, by most accounts it's a library, so I urge the Guildford fans who were in attendance, that is what an atmosphere should be! Bouncing! The Phoenix continued to press and, astonishingly, began to dominate the Flames. Yes, you read that right, the Phoenix, with their depleted resources and sketchy home form, were bossing the Flames. They pressed and pressed and, going into the final minute, pulled Fone for the extra attacker. The Flames were able to police their own zone and managed to break Phoenix hearts with an empty net goal from Jez Lundin at 19min 40sec.
Verdict: The dire expectations before the puck drop proved to be unfounded. This was a good performance from the Phoenix, much more heart and effort shown and a battling performance against a very good Flames team. Taking my Phoenix spec's off I do believe the Phoenix deserved something from the game. Maybe not the win, but a point at least. But myself, and many others, left the Ice Dome buoyed by the improved performance on the ice. Now the Flames, they look the part this year, best performance by a visiting team so far in Altrincham. With the team they have, they should win this league. Where it may fall down for them is their goaltending, Lee is not quite the best in the EPL and could prove to be the only (slight) weak link.

Phoenix v Slough Jets 27th November Game Review
The weekends games saw the Phoenix travel down to Basingstoke to take on the Bison before returning to the Dome to play Slough. After the Phoenix much improved performance over Peterborough last sunday in the bank, saturday's game was a chance to carry on the revival, however, full concentration would be needed as the Bison are no easy team to play, especially in their own barn. In the end the Phoenix beat my own expectations, despite going down to the Bison the Phoenix scored 5 un-answered to come back to Altrincham with a 5-1 victory and both points on offer. Setting things up nicely and the Phoenix first shot at a 4 point weekend in a while!
First Period: Games against Slough have always been tough, ever since joining the EPL the Jets have had a good record against the Phoenix. In the Greener brothers they have some of the leagues best agitators, in Dan Davies they have one of the best Brits and in Calder and Pliskauskas they have two of the EPL's best forwards. The first period was entertaining, fast and relatively even but with Slough creating most of the clear cut chances. Only one goal came of the period, and came for Slough. Showing just how tight the margins are in this league, Calder was left alone on the hashmarks for one second and unleashed a laser of a wrist shot into the Phoenix net. 1-0 Slough and probably a fair return for their efforts, the goal coming at 7min 59sec.
Second Period: What followed, quite simply, was the worst period of hockey from the Phoenix I have seen yet! Slough utterly dominated the Phoenix and the Phoenix looked absolutely lost. Slough's onslaught began less than two minutes into the period when Calder got his second of the game at 21min 51sec. Their third and fourth goals came within two minutes of each other, with J Greener scoring on the powerplay at 27min 57sec and Dough Sheppard scoring a short handed goal at 29min 51sec. In fact that passage of play summed the Phoenix up this period. The Phoenix had, up to this point, had a couple of PP opportunities and struggled, again, to get set up in the opposition zone. Slough get a PP and score within 3 seconds! Then, as they are killing a penalty score a short handed goal. Then when Dan Davies got their 5th at 35min 21sec the Phoenix looked dead and buried. Im not sure if anyone did leave at that point but, I would have forgiven them for doing so!
Third Period: If the second period was the worst i'd ever seen at the Dome, the third showed the Phoenix grew a pair and started to fight and claw their way back into the game. After bemoaning the PP earlier above, it would be the Phoenix PP that would haul them back into the game. Tom Duggan scored first, getting another goal and deservedly so for his recent performances. His goal came at 44min 37sec, less than a minute and a half later Jaroslav Spelda capped his comeback game with a goal at 45min 54sec. Phoenix tails were up, the Phoenix faithful were right back in the game and the pressure continued. Slava (Dave) Koulikov score the Phoenix third goal at 49min 00sec to bring the Phoenix within two. But, despite pulling Fone for the extra attacker no further goals were scored and Slough headed back south with a 5-3 victory.
Verdict: A real chance missed for a four point weekend, one of the worst 20mins of play by a Phoenix team, and for over 40mins of the game absolutely nothing to tempt the hundreds of newbies in the Ice Dome. I am delighted the Phoenix showed some fight and got back into the game, certainly made the scoreboard more respectable, but that cant paper over the fact that for the most part, this was a step back for the Phoenix. Ok, a few lucky bounces in that third period comeback, especially for Koulikov and the Phoenix could have tied the game. The most worrying thing for me now, seems to be the trend where the Phoenix will pull off a great road win, only to scupper that by turning in a lackluster performance at home. I would absolutely trade road wins for home wins! That being said, the Phoenix are slowly returning to health, Tony Hand has had a few games now to see how the team plays, and hopefully to make improvements in game plan and tactics and once again, the Phoenix have a mixed weekend and yet, are still in touching distance of the top. I am thankful that this seasons EPL is so close and tough to call!
Attendance: Boosted by quite a few newbies I would guess around the 1,000 mark again!

Phoenix v Peterborough Phantoms 20th November Game Review
I do apologise with the lateness of another match report, really must give my self a rocket up the proverbial and get them online in a more timely fashion! Anyway, the past weekend saw the Phoenix take on the Peterborough Phantoms in a away/home series. The Phoenix traveled down to Peterborough saturday night and took the lead, before the Phantoms took over. It looks like the Phoenix ran out of steam and the Phantoms ran out 3-1 winners. Another loss for the Phoenix and possibly the team hitting rock bottom?
Sunday night gave them the best chance to right that wrong and get back on track. Sunday's warm up also saw Jaroslav Spelda take to the ice, however he did not ice in the game. Still encouraging signs as it shows the Phoenix injury list is going to get smaller soon! The Phantoms always present a tough nut to crack, mainly because of the most aptly named goalkeeper in hockey, Stephen Wall. On a hot night he can be unbeatable, he gives the Phantoms a chance to win every game they play. A big, mobile, guy he fills the goal and can be a right pain! Sunday night would be a tough test for the Phoenix!
First Period: The Phoenix came out the blocks flying and really took the game to the Phantoms. The lines were, again, being mixed up due to absentee's and, with Tony on the bench it gave him a chance to see how the team plays. Maybe even see some of the frustrations we see in the stands. Anyway the Phoenix were testing Wall in goal and showed some desire and hunger. A much improved performance! The first goal came within the first 5mins with James Archer getting a deserved goal for all his efforts. His goal timed at 4min 40sec. The period continued well for the Phoenix and Slava (Dave) Koulikov netted another goal for the Phoenix at 16min 10sec. Slava is really beginning to up his point production now. The period ended 2-0 to the Phoenix.
Second Period: Could the good form last, or would the Jekyll and Hyde Phoenix return. Thankfully the good form of the first period continued in the second. Juraj Faith has performed very well being moved back into his more natural centre position, note to Sir Tony, why not spread the top line talent with Faith's improved performance in mind! Tom Duggan got a fair fe shifts at centre on the top line, with Faith rotating through lines 2 and 3 in the middle. Worked very well too! The Phoenix scored the next goal of the game when Faith found Cingel at 25min 40sec to make it 3-0 Phoenix. The period continued and the Phoenix continued to pressure the Phantoms, Tom Duggan made it 4-0 Phoenix with another goal to reward his constant good efforts on the ice. His fifth of the season coming at 36min 55sec.
Third Period: With the game at 4-0 the Phoenix eased off and looked to ride out the game and get the two points. The Phantoms threatened but never really tested Fone in goal. A few chances came the way of the Phoenix but Wall stood up to them and kept the Phoenix at bay. Only one goal came in the period and, sadly, it was to break a prospective shutout for Fone. Luke Ferrara was found in the hash marks and blasted the puck high into Fone's top left corner with around 4mins to go in the game.
Verdict: Great to get a win, great to see Spelda out on warm up but, even more important, a great performance from the Phoenix. The Phantoms have often proved to be a difficult opposition for the Phoenix and following on from the loss saturday night, heads could have been down. I must echo what, Nigel said on the podcast during the intervals, maybe the loss in Peterborough was rock bottom for the Phoenix. Maybe it forced them to think, this is not good enough, and forced them to re-focus and up their game. What ever happened, it worked! With that performance, and some bodies coming back from the injury table, thinks are looking a bit brighter for the Phoenix!
Attendance: A little lower than usual, maybe recent results had taken their toll, so i'll guess at around 1,000 in the Ice Dome.
