Florida Gators vs Alabama Saturday 05th December SEC Championship Game

So the Gators completed a perfect season and went up against Alabama for the SEC Championship. Alabama also completing a perfect season! Great set up for a fantastic game!

First Quarter: Alabama won the toss and elected to receive, this tactic almost instantly paid off. Recieving the ball Alabama embarked on a 47 yard 9 play drive into LSU territory. Leigh Tiffin would connect on a 48 yard field goal to put the first points on the board for the Crimson Tide at the 10min 27sec mark. The Crimson Tide heaped more pressure on the Gators when on their next drive, Alabama's Mark Ingram found the endzone after a seven yard touchdown run. With 5min 33sec left Alabama now lead 9-0. The Gators finally clicked and got their own points on the board when Riley Cooper carried for nine and twelve yard third down conversions to the Alabama half. Caleb Sturgis would step up and score a 48 yard effort to peg the scores back to 9-3.

Second Quarter: After exchanging punts in the second quarter, a sack by Ahmad Black forced the Crimson Tide to go for the field goal. So after a 68 yard 12 play drive, from the 34 yard line Tiffin scored to extend their lead to 12-3. This sparked the Gator machine and on their next possession the Gators scored their first touchdown of the game. On a 70 yard scoring drive Tim Tebow accounted for 38 of those yards that took 1min 36sec off the clock. A 23 yard pass to David Nelson narrowed the lead to 12-10. Alabama hit right back, Ingram would score his second touchdown of the evening, a three yard rush into the enzone. Then a 32yard field goal from Sturgis brought the Gators back withing 6 points, 19-13 with 1min 18sec left in the half.

Third Quarter: Alabama would start the second half how they started the first! Forcing the Gators to punt the Crimson Tide would start a 74 yard drive. Greg McElroy would make a 17 yard touchdown pass to Colin Peek to make the scores 26-13.

Fourth Quarter: The Gators would be held to a scoreless second half, and again it would be Alabama putting points on the board. Ingram scored their third touchdown of the game with 13min 49sec left after a one yard rush. The resulting field goal was missed so final scores were 32-13 to Alabama.

Florida Gators vs Florida State Saturday 28th November

Next up for the Gators would be a state rivalry game against the Florida State Seminoles on senior day. This would prove to be a classic in the swamp!

First Quarter: The Gators were the first to put points on the board, at the 6min 48sec mark Tebow passed an 18yard shovel to Hernandez who dashed over to score. This capped a six play 48 yard drive. After last weeks close win over Arkansas the Gators faced Mississippi State in Starkeville, a win would mean the Gators were now 7 and 0 in the season, a loss was unthinkable!

First Quarter: Despite forcing an interception on Miss fist possession, and driving the ball down to the Miss 20 yard line, Caleb Sturgis was unable to score the resulting 37 yard field goal. Mississippi would take the initiative driving the ball 54 yards and 10 plays to the Gator 43 yard line. Derek DePasquale would score the field goal to give Miss the first points on the board. The Gators responded immediately as Tim Tebow connected with Riley Cooper for a 21 yard pass to set up a first and goal. The Bulldogs defensive line would hold strong and the Gators had to settle for a field goal to even the scores.

Second Quarter: The Bulldogs were held three and out on their next drive giving the Gators the ball on their own 33 yard line. The Gators moved the ball to Bulldogs territory, Tebow then took a snap on the 26 yard line and rushed for a touchdown. This would give the Gators a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter. After the Gators had forced the Bulldogs to another three and out, they drove the ball to the Buldogs 10 yard line but were halted once more. Florida Gators vs Arkansas Game Review Saturday 17th October

After the fine win against LSU the danger for the Gators was to allow a game to get away from them! Next up for the number 1 ranked Gators was Arkansas, who visited The Swamp. It would be up to the Gators to show that they can deal with the big games and the smaller games!

First Quarter: A fairly quiet quarter as neither side managed to score a point, the Gators just getting going in the first 15 minutes.

Second Quarter: The Gators forced the Razorbacks to two three and out plays and a punt to start the second quarter. Despite this pressure it was Arkansas who would score the first touchdown of the game. A Tebow fumble late in the first quarter gave Arkansas great field position, and with just 14min 47sec to go in the quarter, sophmore Broderick Green carried for a one yard TD. Two more fumbles from the Gators would suggest UF had LSU hangover! But a 30 yard field goal from Caleb Sturgis capped off a five play 20 yard drive and got Florida on the board. The next Arkansas possession yielded their own field goal to stretch the scores to 10-3. Alex Tejada scored a 22 yard goal.

Third Quarter: The Gators scored first in the second half, when Sturgis scored a monster 51 yard field goal, the longest 50 plus yard attempt since 2004. Things started to turn for the Gators when a 40 yard field goal attempt for Tejada on Arkansas' first possession missed the uprights! The Gators moved into the lead with a 77 yard pass from Tebow to Thompson putting the Gators 13-10 ahead. The Razorbacks levelled the game 13 a piece when Tejada scored a 31 yard field goal.

Fourth Quarter: Arkansas were determined to make the Gators work for the win, when they forced the Gators to punt in their possession. This pushed the Razorbacks to their own 13 yard line. What followed was a superb 87 yard drive, capped off with a 75 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Mallet to Greg Childs, this gave them a 20-13 lead withs 9min 40sec left in the game. It took only 2min13sec for the Gators to respond, when Jeff Demps found the endzone with his fifth rushing touchdown of the seaon with a 10 yard dash. With 3min 08sec left Tejada missed a 38 yard field goal attempt, this turned the ball over to the Gators on their own 21 yard line. Tebow the completed 3 passes to Riley Cooper and two passes as the Gators marched down the field to allow Sturgis to score a 27 yard game winning field goal. Final scores 23-20 to Florida.

In front of a record crowd in Baton Rouge the No.1 and No.4 ranked teams would go head to head. The prize, season long bragging rights and an extension to their perfect season!

First Quarter: The game was not to start well for LSU, the Gators defence forced LSU to punt the ball on its first drive of the game. Then with 12min 08 left in the quarter Jasper scored the field goal to tie the game at 3. The Gators, not to be outdone, then responded with an 80 yard touchdown drive, finished with a 24 yard pass from Tebow to Riley Cooper. That put the Gators 10-3 up with 50sec left in the half. Sadly for LSU, the resulting possession ended with an interception from junior cornerback Joe Haden halting the LSU drive.

Third Quarter: The Gators missed a 25 yard field goal in the third quarter, which was to be a little slower compared to the first half!

Fourth Quarter: Sturgis would then put the only points of the second half on the board for the Gators. An 11 play 44 yard drive was capped by a 32 yard field goal would give the Gators a 13-3 lead with 7min 27sec left in the game. Florida Gators vs Kentuky Review Saturday 26th September

Last saturday saw the Gators finally go out on the road, next stop Lexington and a matchup in the Commonwealth stadium. The chance for a 4-0 season awaiting the gators!

First Quarter: After beginning on their own 34 yard line the Florida Gators were quickly in a scoring position with a first and goal opportunity, Sadly for the blue and orange they had to settle for three points, when Caleb Sturgis scored a 22 yard field goal with 11min 13sec left on the quarter. After forcing Kentuky to punt from their own end zone the Gators were in great field position. Tebow was able to rush for a three yard touchdown, and with the conversion Florida were 10-0 with 7min 11sec to go. More misery was to come the way of Kentuky, another punt from their endzone, this time was blocked by Chris Rainey. Another touchdown and conversion had the Gators up 17-0. The next Gator possetion yielded a 58 yard scoring drive, capped by a two yard rush with 2min 35sec to play. The 2min and 34second drive ended with a 13yard touchdown pass for David Nelson. To cap it off Aaron Hernadez caught a 44 yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the quarter putting the Gators 31-0 ahead.

Second Quarter: The Gators defence held firm in the initial stages until the 8min 48sec mark. The Wildcats went on a 14 play 58yard drive, capped by a two yard reception on a fourth and goal score by Ross Boque. This cut the lead to 31-7 in the first half.

Third Quarter: With 3min 49sec remaining The Gators got their first points in the second half with a 32 yard field goal from Sturgis. Not much else happened in the quarter!

Fourth Quarter: After trading possession until the Gators forced Kentuky to punt from their endzone. The resulting reception and drive got the Gators to the Wildcats 8 yard line. Brantley only needed on play to connect with Riley Cooper on an 8 yard touchdown pass. This score now 41-7 with 6min 39seconds, this score was to prove to be the final of the game.

Florida Gators vs Tennessee Review Saturday 19th September

Im spoiling you, honestly I am! Today your not getting just one game review, but two!!!

Ill do separate posts but ill start with the Gators vs Tennessee, followed by LSU vs ULL.

So far the Gators are 2-0 in the season and now came up against Tennessee in another home game at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. This game would also prove to be more of a test to the Gators than the previous games against Charleston and Troy.

First Quarter: Florida were the first onto the scoreboard at the 11min 33sec mark when Caleb Sturgis kicked for a field goal capping of an eight play 10 yard drive. A 37 yard Field goal sailing over the uprights. Before the end of the quarter Tennessee would level the scores through junior kicker Daniel Lincoln, scoring a 24 yard field goal.

Second Quarter: The Gators made a great start to the second quarter, after putting together an 11 play drive the Gators scored the first touchdown of the game. When Tebow ran for 1 yard into the end zone, scores 10-3. Not to be outdone Tennessee star Eric Berry intercepted a Tebow pass which gave Tennessee another field goal score from 20 yard. The Gators responded with a 52 yard rive and Sturgis added another 3 point field goal with 51sec left in the half, scores now 13-6.

Third Quarter: Tennessee were on the receiving side of the ball at the start of the second half, however it was not to be lucky for them. Junior cornerback Joe Haden picked off a Johnathan Crompton pass, this allowed the Gators to add another field goal from the 35 yard line. By the end of the quarter the Gators scored their second touchdown, Taking a total of 6mins 52sec the 13 play 69 yard drive resulted in sophmore Jeff Demps scoring for the Gators. Scores going into the final quarter: 23-6.

Fourth Quarter: The game continued its ebb-flow pattern and Tennessee counted the Gator attack when the Gators QB Tebow fumbled the pall on the Tennessee two yard line. Tennessee then drove 63 yards down field to score their first touchdown of the game. Senior tailback Montario Hardest drove over the line on a 17 yard run with 8min 11sec left in the game, scores edging closer now: 23-13. After forcing the Gators to punt the ball, Tennessee forced a fourth and sixth down. Crompton then attempted a long pass down field, which, sadly for Tennessee, was picked off by safety Ahmad Black. The turn over in possession allowed Florida to close out the game and hold onto a 23-13 win.

Attendance: 90,894, a school record.

Florida Gators vs Troy Game Review Saturday 12th September

After the easy win against Charleston Southern it was Troy up next for the Gators, standing in the Gators way of a 2-0 start to the season. The weight of expectation would be on the Gators, as the number one ranked team in the country they would be expected to turn over Troy with little drama. So on an overcast Florida afternoon the game got underway at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

First Quarter: The quarter began pretty slowly with both teams surrendering a couple of fumbles. It was a fumble recovery that would get the Gators underway when, at 6min 39sec Thompson received a 6 yard pass to score. Yet another fumble would see Troy on the board, with 51sec of the quarter left the Gators Moody fumbled the ball to Troy's Gulsman to score a 45 yard field goal.

Second Quarter: In the story of the game the Gators were able to capitalise on another Troy fumble when Silvoy coughed up the snap, Gators Tebow sent a 36 yard pass to Cooper in the endzone to make the scores 14-3. Next score for the Gators came by way of the Quarterback Tebow, from the 4 yard line he scored his 45th rushing touchdown of his career. Then with less than 6 minutes to go Trattou deflected Troy's quarterback Levi Brown's pass, the ball fell to Thomspon who rushed for 33yards to score. The last action of the half fell to Jeff Demps picked up on another fumbled snap for a 24 yard run to make the scores 35-3.

Third Quarter: Almost straight away, in possession of the ball from the get go the Gators went down field with a 32 yard touchdown pass from Tebow to James. It got worse for Troy when, with 8min 38sec to go, the Gators finished off a seven play, 62 yard drive for running back Chris Rainey to score, 49-3. With 6mins to go in the quarter John Brantley took over at QB. Not to be completely wiped out Troy were able to score another three points with a 42yard field goal with 38 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter: As with the previous game against Charleston, not much happened in the fourth quarter. The only score was from the Gators when freshman Mike Gillislee caught a six yard pass from Brantley to make the final scores 56-6 to the Gators.

Florida Gators vs Charleston Southern Game Review Saturday 5th September

Right so bear with me on this one, this is my first collage football game review. This was the Gators first game of the season, and saw the visit of Charleston to The Swap. Ill try and add as much detail as I can but these reviews will be a bit of a work in progress!

First Quarter: The Florida Gators were the first on the board, with a drive starting on their own 10yard line the Gators took about a minute and a half and 4 plays to reach the Charleston end zone. The drive culminating in a 8 yard run by J Demps, with the resulting kick the Gators lead the game by a score of 7 to nothing.
Not finished the Gatros began another drive on their own 24 yard line, C Rainey picked the ball up from behind the line of scrimmage and ran the full 76 yards to the endzone. Another converted kick and the Gators went in at the end of the first quarter with a 14-0 lead.

Second Quarter: The Gators really pressed home in the second quarter scoring touchdowns at 14min 22sec, 11min 39sec, 7min 55sec, and 5min 24seconds. Not to be completely blanked from the scoreboard Charleston Southern got some points at 5min 37sec through a 38 yard field goal.

Third Quarter: This quarter saw the Gators blank Charleston again scoring two touchdowns at 12min 39sec and 00min 24seconds. Going into the final quarter the Gators lead 55-3.

Fourth Quarter: The game was already won and this was reflected in the lack of scoring in the final quarter. The Gators getting back to full match speed and not wanting any injuries. The only score of the quarter came from a 7 yard touchdown run from M Gillislee.

Attendance: 90,621

The Gainesville Sun review:

Highlights:

An easy win for The Gators, but as a much fancied team you still have to beat the team that's on the field in front of you! So that's my first Collage Football review, if you have any comments on how I can improve each posting please email The Angry Budgie email address at the top of the page! As im a bit of a novice at this any input is appreciated!

New for the 09/10 Season

Ok so with the end of August upon us and the hockey season fast approaching, I thought I would do a post outlining what I intend to do for this new season. I would also like any input from you out there in readerland! So ill set out what I plan on doing, then, if you have any thoughts send them to The Angry Budgie email account shown above right, and you never know, I may even use those ideas!

The major innovation for the new season will of course be in-game live updates courtesy if The Angry Budgie's twitter account. You can click on and follow TAB on twitter using the link above. So onto the game coverage, as with last season ill plan to structure it as follows:

  • Short Introduction on the game, possibly including a comment on the previous away game.
  • First Period review.
  • Second Period review.
  • Third Period review.
  • Verdict.
  • Attendance.
  • Youtube link to Phoenix TV highlights (hoping that the Phoenix webmasters do the same highlights package as before!).
  • Link to MEN article on the game.
So that's the plan, if you have any thoughts or comments on how I could improve the coverage please let me know!

Also, as The Angry Budgie will also be covering US Collage Football with the Florida Gators, ill try and do game reviews much the same as my hockey reviews. This is where TAB could use some help! As I cant see the game live, ill be basing my reviews on youtube footage, and highlights from the Gators website. If there is anyone out there with knowledge of good websites and/or reviews of collage football I would appreciate any links you can think of!

Exciting times ahead for The Angry Budgie, I just hope you all will enjoy what you read!

Ill try and get a season preview online before the 20th September, but The Angry Budgie is going on tour early september which will affect what I can do! Will be nice to get a holiday in before hockey madness starts!

Anyway I hope you are all enjoying your summer! Roll on September!

The Florida Gators

Those of you who know me will also know, along with hockey im an American Football fan, my team of choice - The Florida Gators. Based in Gainesville rock city the Gators play out off
the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium or 'The Swamp'.

I know American Football is really just a soft version of rugby but I do enjoy watching it, plus I find it amazing that the Gators, who are a university team, play in front of regular 90,000+ fans a game!

So beginning the 5th September, ill start doing as good a game review as I can for each of the Gators 12 regular season games. This is, of course, in addition to my regular game reviews for the Phoenix' upcoming debut EPL season!

The Gators 2009 season is as follows:

September 5th, vs Charleston Southern @The Swap, Gainesville.
September 12th, vs Troy @ The Swamp, Gainesville.
September 19th, vs Tennessee @ The Swamp, Gainesville.
September 26th, vs Kentuky in Lexington.
October 10th, vs LSU in Baton Rouge
October 17th, vs Arkansas @ The Swamp, Gainesville.
October 24th, vs Mississippi State in Starkville.
October 31st, vs Georgia in Jacksonville.
November 7th, vs Vanderbuilt @ The Swamp, Gainesville.
November 14th, vs South Carolina in Columbia.
November 21st, vs Florida International @ The Swamp, Gainesville.
